Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "When a servant commits fornication, faith leaves him and becomes like a canopy (suspended) over his head; then when he separates himself from that (act), faith returns to him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), for they used all of its narrators as evidence. It also has a supporting narration (shahid) on the condition of Imam Muslim:

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (S) this name is distorted to "al-Hiri", although it occurs correctly with the author in more than ten places; his name is "Ahmad bin Muhammad".
Grading: (2) Its chain is "sahih". Ibn al-Had means "Yazid bin Abd Allah bin al-Had". Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4690) narrated it from Ishaq bin Suwayd al-Ramli, from Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, with this chain.
