It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I witnessed a deed of al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) such that had I been its doer, it would have been dearer to me than anything that could be weighed against it. He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was supplicating against the polytheists. Al-Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! We will not say to you what the people of Musa (peace be upon him) said to him: 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight; we are sitting right here.' [Surah al-Ma'idah: 24] Rather, we will fight (against the enemies) on your right, on your left, in front of you and behind you." Abdullah said: I saw the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) light up at this, and it greatly pleased him.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it!

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "sahih". Important point: Isra'il: he is Ibn Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i; Mukhariq: he is Ibn Khalifah al-Ahmasi (also said to be Ibn Abd Allah bin Jabir, or Ibn Abd al-Rahman); Tariq: he is Ibn Shihab al-Ahmasi; and Abd Allah: he is Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad [6/ (3698) and 7/ (4070)] and al-Bukhari (3952 and 4609) through several routes from Isra'il, with this chain. Note / Clarification: So al-Hakim's including it (in al-Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part, since it is already in al-Bukhari. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad [7/ (4376)] from 'Abidah bin Humayd, and by al-Bukhari (4609) and al-Nasa'i (11075) through the route of 'Ubayd Allah al-Ashja'i, from Sufyan al-Thawri; both of them, 'Abidah and Sufyan, from Mukhariq al-Ahmasi. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad [31/ (18827)] from Waki', from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Mukhariq, from Tariq, in mursal form. General principle: What is "mahfuz" (preserved) is the narration of al-Ashja'i from Sufyan al-Thawri, because it agrees with the narration of those other than Sufyan al-Thawri who narrated the hadith in connected form. That is why al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (3420): The hadith of al-Ashja'i is more correct.
