Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5506

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was preparing an army, or inspecting it, at Naqi' al-Khayl (which was a pasture for horses), when Sayyiduna al-Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is al-Abbas, the paternal uncle of your Prophet, the most generous-handed of Quraysh and the most kind and compassionate towards them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of transmission, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this name has been distorted into "Abu Sahl" (in the full form), whereas the correct form is "Abu Suhayl" (in the diminutive form), and he is Nafi' bin Malik al-Asbahi.

Note / Clarification: (2) Imam al-Khattabi says in "Ma'alim al-Sunan" (1/ 245): The hadith scholars sometimes commit a tashif (scribal error) in this and narrate it as "al-Baqi'" (with a ba'), whereas al-Baqi' is the place of the graves in Madinah.
Note / Clarification: We say: As for "al-Naqi'" (with a nun), it is the place that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Caliphs after him designated as a protected pasture (hima) for the livestock of charity. It is at the head of the valley of al-'Aqiq, twenty farsakhs from Madinah, and its extent is one mile by eight miles. The basic meaning of "naqi'" is any place where water collects. According to the correct view, it is a different place from "Naqi' al-Khadimat".

Grading: (3) This hadith is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although there is some weakness (lin) in Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri, he is corroborated in the next chain with the author (al-Hakim). And Muhammad bin Talhah al-Taymi (who is Ibn Abd al-Rahman bin Talhah) is "hasan al-hadith".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad in his "Musnad" [3/ (1610)] and al-Nasa'i (8118) via 'Ali bin al-Madini, and by Ibn Hibban (7052) via Ibrahim bin Hamzah al-Zubayri; both of them ('Ali and Ibrahim) narrate it from Muhammad bin Talhah with this same chain.
