Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5505

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the Battle of Hunayn. Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) and I stuck close to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and did not leave him alone. At that time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding a white mule of his which Farwah bin Nufathah al-Judhami had given him as a gift. When the Muslims and the disbelievers clashed, the Muslims turned their backs and began to retreat. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began urging his mule towards the disbelievers. Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was holding the bridle of the mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), holding it back so that it would not run too fast, and Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) was holding the stirrup of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abbas, call out to the people of the Samurah (those who gave the Pledge of Ridwan beneath the tree)." Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: By Allah, when they heard my voice they turned back just as a cow eagerly turns back to its calves, and they said: "Here we are, here we are!" Then they and the disbelievers began to fight, and a call was raised among the Ansar; they were saying: "O company of the Ansar!" Then this call was narrowed down to Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj, and they began saying: "O Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj! O Banu al-Harith bin al-Khazraj!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), riding on his mule, raised his neck and began watching their fighting. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now the oven of battle has blazed up (that is, the battle has become fierce)." Al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took some pebbles and threw them towards the faces of the disbelievers, then said: "By the Lord of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), they are defeated!" I began to look, and the state of the battle was still just as I had been seeing it; but as soon as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) struck them with the pebbles, from then on I kept seeing their strength grow blunt and them retreating.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) This name has been corrected from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". Manuscript (Z) has "Nafaqah", which is a tashif (scribal error); perhaps it was originally "Na'amah" and then the dots were altered. The printed edition has "Na'amah". Imam al-Nawawi indicated that both versions of his name are narrated in Sahih Muslim, then said: "The correct and well-known one is the first", i.e. "Nufathah" (with dammah on the nun, a light fa', then an alif, and finally a tha').

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator "Ibn Wahb" is Abdullah bin Wahb, and "Yunus" is Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli.
Reference / Source: This hadith was narrated by Imam Muslim (1775) from Abu al-Tahir Ahmad bin 'Amr bin al-Sarh, and by al-Nasa'i (8599) from Yunus bin Abd al-A'la; both of them from Abdullah bin Wahb with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore, al-Hakim's inclusion of it (in al-Mustadrak) as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part (since it is already in Sahih Muslim).
Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed in brief under hadith number (5192) via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri.
Note / Clarification: "'Atfatuhum" means: their return (turning back).
Note / Clarification: "Al-watis" is like an oven in which bread is baked. The expression "hamiya al-watis" (the oven has become hot) is an idiom for the intensity of battle.
Note / Clarification: "Haddahum kalilan" means: their strength had become weak.
