Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5497

(1) حسنٌ لغيره، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف عبد الله بن عَمرو بن أبي أُميَّة، فقد قال الدارقطني في "سننه" عند الحديث (1092): ليس بقوي. ثم إنَّ المحفوظ في هذا الخبر أنه مرسلٌ ليس فيه ذكر ابن عباس، كذلك رواه غير واحدٍ عن ابن أبي الزِّناد - واسمه عبد الرحمن - وأغلب الظن أنَّ ذكر ابن عباس فيه هنا وهمٌ من ابن أبي أمية، والله أعلم.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting evidence). This chain is da'if because "Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Abi Umayyah" is weak (al-Daraqutni called him "not strong" in his "Sunan" under hadith 1092).
Defect ('illah): What is "mahfuz" (preserved) in this report is that it is "mursal" and does not mention Ibn 'Abbas. More than one narrator reported it this way from Ibn Abi al-Zinad (Abd al-Rahman). Most likely the mention of Ibn 'Abbas here is an "error" (wahm) by Ibn Abi Umayyah. And Allah knows best.
وأخرجه اللالكائي في "شرح أصول الاعتقاد" (2728)، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 26/ 335 من طريق داود بن عمرو الضبّي، عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي الزناد، عن محمد بن عُقبة، عن أبي رشدين، عن كريب مولى ابن عباس: إن كان رسول الله ﷺ ليُجِلُّ العباس … مرسلًا.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Lalaka'i in "Sharh Usul al-I'tiqad" (2728) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 335 via Dawud bin 'Amr al-Dabbi, from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from Muhammad bin 'Uqbah, from Abu Rishdin, from Kurayb the freed slave of Ibn 'Abbas, as "mursal": that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to honour al-'Abbas.
وأخرجه ابن عساكر 26/ 334 - 335 من طريق بكار بن محمد بن جارست، عن ابن أبي الزناد، عن محمد بن عقبة، عن كريب مرسلًا.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 334-335 via Bakkar bin Muhammad bin Jarist, from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Muhammad bin 'Uqbah, from Kurayb, as "mursal".
وكذلك أخرجه عبد الله بن أحمد في "فضائل الصحابة" (1799)، وأبو القاسم البغوي في "معجم الصحابة" (1838)، واللالكائي في "أصول الاعتقاد"، (2728)، وابن عساكر 26/ 335 من طريق داود بن عمرو الضبّي كذلك، والبلاذُري في "أنساب الأشراف" 4/ 16 من طريق الواقدي، كلاهما عن ابن أبي الزِّناد، عن موسى بن عقبة، عن كريب أبي رِشدين، مرسلًا. فذكرا في هذه الرواية موسى بن عقبة بدل أخيه محمد بن عقبة، وكلاهما ثقة.
Reference / Source: Likewise it was recorded by Abdullah bin Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1799), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1838), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (2728) and Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 335, also via Dawud bin 'Amr al-Dabbi; and by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" 4/ 16 via al-Waqidi. Both of them narrate it from Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Musa bin 'Uqbah, from Kurayb Abu Rishdin, as "mursal".
Technical note: In this narration they mentioned his brother "Musa bin 'Uqbah" instead of Muhammad bin 'Uqbah, and both are thiqah.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the narration recorded by al-Baladhuri 4/ 16-17, Abu Ya'la (4936), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1852), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (193), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (1721), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (266), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6940), al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" 10/ 293, Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 329 and 330, and al-Dhahabi in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 12/ 376, via several routes from Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah.
ولفظه عند بعضهم: ما رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يُجِلُّ أحدًا ما يُجِلُّ العباس، أو يُكرِم العباسَ. وعند بعضهم: لقد رأيت من تعظيم رسول الله ﷺ عمه العباس أمرًا عجبًا أو عجيبًا. وقال الذهبي في "السير" 2/ 92: إسناده صالح.
Text of the hadith: The wording of some of them is: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) honour (or show respect to) anyone as much as he honoured al-'Abbas." And the wording of others is: "I saw an amazing degree of reverence from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) towards his uncle al-'Abbas." Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Siyar" 2/ 92: Its chain is "salih" (acceptable).
