Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: As far as the mention of the story of Zaynab and Abu al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them) is concerned, this chain is "hasan" because it contains Ibn Ishaq (Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar), who explicitly stated that he heard it, so the suspicion of his tadlis is removed.
Technical note / Error of the author: But as for the story of al-'Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him) erred in this book by inserting it after the story of Zaynab with Ibn Ishaq's chain to 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), as al-Bayhaqi pointed out in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 322.
Details of the narration: The story of Zaynab and Abu al-'As has already passed with the author, separate from the story of al-'Abbas, at numbers (4352) and (5109), and it will also come separately at number (7012) with the same chain to 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that is given here.
Grading: The story of the captivity of al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of Badr was narrated by Ibn Ishaq through several connected chains, one of which is "hasan" while the rest have some criticism. Yet although they are weak, the report gains strength from them collectively and, if Allah wills, rises to the "level of sahih". Besides this, some parts of the story of al-'Abbas mentioned here are also narrated with a "sahih chain", as will be explained later.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 322 from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Technical note / Clarification of the chain: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 322 and "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 142-143 through al-Hakim in his narration of the book "Maghazi Ibn Ishaq" (chain: Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, from Yunus bin Bukayr). Yunus bin Bukayr says that Ibn Ishaq then returned to "the first chain" and mentioned Quraysh sending a delegation to ransom their captives, each people ransoming their captive for what they agreed upon; then he mentioned the story of al-'Abbas. By "the first chain" Yunus meant Ibn Ishaq's narration in which he says: "Yazid bin Ruman narrated to me from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, and al-Zuhri, Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban, 'Asim bin 'Umar bin Qatadah, Abdullah bin Abi Bakr and others of our scholars narrated to me." Their narrations have been combined in the account of Badr; then he would insert other chains in between and then return to this chain. And Allah knows best.
Variation in the narration and preponderance: This is what al-Bayhaqi said, but the narration in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 26/ 288 contradicts him. There this story is narrated separately (Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar, from Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq), in which it is said: "Then he returned to the first chain", and Ibn 'Asakir (or a lower narrator) clarified that this means the chain "al-Husayn bin Abdullah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas", not the chains with which Ibn Ishaq began the account of Badr (as al-Bayhaqi understood). Al-Dhahabi relied on this (the view of Ibn 'Asakir) in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" 3/ 82, and if Allah wills this is correct. Note that al-Husayn bin Abdullah is "da'if in hadith".
Supporting evidence: This is supported by the fact that Ahmad recorded in his "Musnad" 5/ (3310) (and through him Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 288) from Yazid bin Harun, from Muhammad bin Ishaq: "Someone who heard 'Ikrimah narrated to me, from Ibn 'Abbas." It seems that Ibn Ishaq (or a lower narrator) here omitted the name of al-Husayn bin Abdullah because of his weakness, and thus committed tadlis.
Reference / Source: The story of al-'Abbas was also recorded separately by Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (409) via Muhammad bin Salamah al-Harrani, from Ibn Ishaq, in which Ibn Ishaq says: "Some of our companions narrated to me from Miqsam, from Ibn 'Abbas."
Grading: This chain is da'if because the narrator is unnamed.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 10/ 49 and "Tarikh" 2/ 465-466, and by Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 507, via Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash, from Ibn Ishaq, from Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, from Abu Salih Badham (or Badhan), the freed slave of Umm Hani', from Ibn 'Abbas.
Status of the narrators: Al-Kalbi is "matruk" (abandoned) and Abu Salih is "da'if". Ibn Ishaq was corroborated by "Muhammad bin Kathir al-'Abdi" (see Ibn Sa'd 4/ 13), but he attributed it via Abu Salih to al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) himself (instead of Ibn 'Abbas)!
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd 4/ 12 via Harun bin Abi 'Isa; by Ibn Sa'd and Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the second part of his "Tarikh" (560) via Ibrahim bin Sa'd; and by Ya'qub in "al-Ma'rifah" 1/ 506 and al-Tahawi in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (3220) via Abdullah bin Idris. All three narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq as "mursal".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 10/ 49, Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 5/ 1737, al-Bayhaqi in "al-Dala'il" 3/ 143 and Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 293 via Abdullah bin Salih, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from 'Ali bin Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas. In this narration it is stated that forty uqiyah were taken from al-'Abbas on the day of Badr, and that Allah gave him forty slaves in exchange.
Technical note: Although 'Ali bin Abi Talhah did not meet Ibn 'Abbas (so it is disconnected), his narration from him is accepted by many scholars because it is a well-known written collection (sahifah) on Tafsir. Some said that he took this Tafsir from Mujahid and 'Ikrimah, both of whom are thiqah, so the chain is considered connected.
Reference / Source: The last part of it, concerning the occasion of revelation of the verse, was recorded by Ishaq bin Rahawayh (in the Musnad of Ibn 'Abbas section, 898), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" 1/ 507, al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 10/ 49, Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 5/ 1737, Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (287), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (11398) and Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 293, via Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Abdullah bin Abi Najih, from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah (or Mujahid), from Ibn 'Abbas.
Grading: Whether it is 'Ata' or Mujahid, both are thiqah, and this chain is "hasan". See also number (5510).
Technical note / Shudhudh (irregularity): What is mentioned in al-Hakim's al-Mustadrak (and from him in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 6/ 322), namely that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted the request of al-'Abbas that what the Muslims had taken from him as spoils be counted towards his ransom, is something al-Hakim alone narrated, and it is "shadh". In contrast, in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 3/ 143 (also through al-Hakim, in his narration of "Maghazi Ibn Ishaq", from Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Asamm, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi, from Yunus bin Bukayr) it is narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to grant al-'Abbas this request and said: "No, that is something Allah gave us from you."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The same came in the narration of Ibn 'Asakir 26/ 288, which is via Ridwan bin Ahmad al-Saydalani, from Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi, from Yunus bin Bukayr, from Ibn Ishaq.
Summary of the investigation: And the same came in all the other narrations of this story of al-'Abbas mentioned above, from Ibn Ishaq and from others.
