It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that some men of the Ansar sought permission from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Permit us to let go of the ransom of our sister's son al-Abbas (that is, to waive it)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, you will not leave (of it) even a single dirham."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is strong because of Muhammad bin Fulayh (Ibn Sulayman), who is "saduq" and there is no harm in him; moreover he has been corroborated. Identification of narrators: "Ibn Shihab" is al-Zuhri (Muhammad bin Muslim bin 'Ubaydullah). Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bukhari (4017) from Ibrahim bin al-Mundhir with this same chain. Note: Therefore, the inclusion of it by al-Hakim as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bukhari (2537, 3048) and Ibn Hibban (4794) via Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah, from his paternal uncle Musa bin 'Uqbah. 2/ 1269. Explanation: Their saying "for our sister's son" was because the grandmother of al-'Abbas was a woman from Banu al-Najjar whom Hashim bin Abd Manaf married, and she bore him Abd al-Muttalib. Al-Khattabi said this in "A'lam al-Hadith" 2/ 1269.
Correction of the text: Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "'alayhi", while what is established from (S) and (M) is the standard usage.
Technical note / Qira'ah: Abu 'Amr bin al-'Ala' and Abu Ja'far Yazid bin al-Qa'qa' read it this way (with dammah on the hamzah and fathah on the sin, followed by an alif), while the remaining reciters read it with fathah on the hamzah and sukun on the sin (without an alif). See Ibn al-Jazari's "al-Nashr" 2/ 277.
