Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 548

Abdullah bin Salimah narrates: Two other men and I went to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He sent the two of them off on some errand and said: "You two are strong men, so strive to protect your religion." Then he went into the toilet, and on returning he called for water and washed his hands. Then he began reciting the Qur'an. We found this somewhat strange, so he said: "Perhaps you find it strange! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the Qur'an after relieving himself (without ablution), and he would also eat meat, and nothing would prevent him (peace and blessings be upon him) from reciting the Qur'an except janabah (major ritual impurity)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain. Although the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not use Abdullah bin Salimah as evidence, he is not a narrator who has been criticised.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Because of 'Abd Allah bin Salimah, this chain is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement about the narrator 'Abd Allah bin Salimah, but in supporting narrations his hadith is accepted as hasan.
Important point: Abu Dawud here refers to "Sulayman bin Dawud al-Tayalisi".
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud (the author of al-Sunan) narrated it (229) through Hafs bin 'Umar, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad, Ibn Majah (594), al-Nasa'i (257) and Ibn Hibban (799-800) narrated it through various routes from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban also joined "Mis'ar bin Kidam" with Shu'bah.
Details of the narration: In some sources this narration is abridged and does not mention the incident of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with the two men.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/ 1123), al-Tirmidhi (146) and al-Nasa'i (258) narrated it in abridged form through al-A'mash and Ibn Abi Layla, from 'Amr bin Murrah.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Note / Clarification: This narration will come again at number (7260).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad reported (872), through the chain of 'Amir bin al-Simt from Abu al-Gharif, the practice of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): that he performed wudu' and said: "This is how I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform wudu'."
Details of the narration: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited some of the Qur'an and said: "This is for one who is not in a state of major impurity (junub); as for the junub, he should not recite even a single verse."
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Note / Clarification: Regarding the word "'iljan", Ibn al-Athir says: "al-'ilj" means a strong, tall man. "'Alija" means: the two of you should diligently carry out the work to which I have called you.
Note / Clarification: The words "laysa al-janabah" mean "ghayr al-janabah" (i.e. circumstances other than major impurity).
