Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: About which of them? The people said: Tell us about Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: "He learned the Book of Allah and the Sunnah, then he reached the utmost limit (of knowledge), and that is sufficient for his excellence." Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading of the chain: (2) There is no harm in its men, but "Abu al-Bakhtari" (whose name is Sa'id bin Fayruz) did not live in the time of 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (so it is munqati'). However, a similar narration is reported from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through other routes, one of which has passed at number (5465). Technical note: Abu Mu'awiyah is "Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir" and al-A'mash is "Sulayman bin Mihran". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (2/ 298), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 540), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 129), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Madkhal" (103) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (21/ 412, 420, 32/ 61-62 and 33/ 142), through several routes from al-A'mash. Technical note / Examination of direct hearing: In some routes from al-A'mash, Abu al-Bakhtari said: "We came to 'Ali and asked him." Outwardly this indicates that Abu al-Bakhtari met 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but this is not established. Had it been established, it would not have been hidden from Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj and the hadith scholars after him such as al-Bukhari and Abu Hatim al-Razi, whereas they stated with certainty that Abu al-Bakhtari did not meet 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). (5731). Details of the narration: For further detail, see what is coming at number (5731).
