It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this verse: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face" [Surah al-An'am: 52], that it was revealed about five people of Quraysh, among whom were I and Ibn Mas'ud. Quraysh had said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): If you drive these people away from you, we will sit with you. Do you bring these people close to you in preference to us? So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening" up to "the grateful" [Surah al-An'am: 52-53].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih. This chain is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports because it contains "Mu'ammal bin Isma'il", though he has been corroborated. Technical note: Sufyan is Ibn Sa'id al-Thawri, and Shurayh is Ibn Hani'. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Muslim (2413) and al-Nasa'i (8207, 11098) via Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, and by al-Nasa'i (8163) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan. Both of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain. Note / Comment: Therefore, the inclusion of it by al-Hakim as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight on his part. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Muslim (2413), al-Nasa'i (8180, 8209) and Ibn Hibban (6573) via Isra'il, and by Ibn Majah (4128) via Qays bin al-Rabi'. Both of them narrate it from al-Miqdam bin Shurayh. Technical note: Qays bin al-Rabi' named them (the Companions), saying: "Concerning me, and concerning Ibn Mas'ud, Suhayb, 'Ammar, al-Miqdad and Bilal." Whereas Isra'il said: "It was me, Ibn Mas'ud, a man from Hudhayl, Bilal, and two men whom I am not naming."
