It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with him were Abu Bakr and other Companions. We passed by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who is this?" It was said: Abdullah bin Mas'ud. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed Abdullah recites the Qur'an fresh, just as it was revealed." Then Abdullah praised and glorified his Lord, and praised his Lord most beautifully; then he supplicated to Allah, and made a most comprehensive and excellent supplication, the best a servant could ask of his Lord. He said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka imanan la yartadd, wa na'iman la yanfad, wa murafaqata Muhammadin (peace and blessings be upon him) fi a'la illiyyina fi jinanika jinan al-khuld' (O Allah, I ask You for faith that never fades, for blessing that never ends, and I seek the companionship of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the highest ranks of Your everlasting Gardens). The narrator says that meanwhile he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept saying: "Ask, and you will be given; ask, and you will be given." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I hurried to give him this good news, and I found that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had reached him before me, and he was one who raced ahead in good deeds.

Grading: (1) The hadith is sahih, but this narration is reported from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) (rather than from 'Ali). Technical note / Examination of the chain: Its chain is sahih if it is established that 'Abdullah bin Yazid al-Suhbani heard from Kumayl bin Ziyad. For Kumayl bin Ziyad is among the senior Successors and died in Kufah before a number of the Companions, whereas 'Abdullah bin Yazid, who narrates from him, is among the companions of Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i, and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i is one who narrates from the senior Successors. Therefore there is some unease in the heart about 'Abdullah bin Yazid al-Suhbani having heard from Kumayl. Perhaps for this reason al-Bukhari, in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/ 225), in the biography of 'Abdullah bin Yazid, mentioned among his teachers only Ibrahim al-Nakha'i and Yazid bin Ahmar, and did not name Kumayl bin Ziyad. For if 'Abdullah's hearing from Kumayl were established, then his hearing from the Companions who died in Kufah after Kumayl would also be deemed sound, whereas that is not established. And Allah knows best. (2929). Technical note / Variation in the narration: Furthermore, there is disagreement over the name of the Companion who narrates this report, from Jarir (Ibn 'Abd al-Hamid). Ishaq bin Rahawayh attributed it to 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), while Yusuf bin Musa al-Qattan contradicted him (as in the "Amali" of al-Qadi al-Mahamili and in Ibn 'Asakir 33/ 96) and mentioned 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). Conclusion (the preserved version): The preserved (mahfuz) version is that this narration belongs to 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), because it is also narrated from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) through another route, which has passed with the author at number (2929). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is reported from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) himself in Musnad Ahmad (7/ 4340) and Ibn Hibban (7067), in which 'Umar bin al-Khattab and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them) are mentioned in place of 'Ali bin Abi Talib (and Abu Bakr), and its chain is "hasan". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "Ibn Mas'ud recites the Qur'an fresh (ghadd) just as it was revealed" has a shahid in the hadith of 'Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him), which has passed with the author at number (2931), and its chain is "hasan".
