Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5470

Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah narrates from his father that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had climbed a tree to pick its fruit for the people. A wind blew which uncovered his shins (and the people saw how thin they were). Upon this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose Hand is my soul, these two shins are heavier in the Scale than Mount Uhud."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of transmission, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence).
Technical note: There is no harm in the men of this chain, except that "Abu 'Attab Sahl bin Hammad" is alone in narrating it as "mawsul" (connected) by mentioning Qurrah (bin Iyas al-Muzani). Bahz bin Asad and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi contradicted him (and both are more reliable and more eminent than Abu 'Attab); they did not take this narration beyond Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah (i.e. they narrated it as mursal). But the hadith has other shawahid (supporting reports) on the basis of which it is judged sahih.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by 'Abbas al-Duri in his "Tarikh" (226), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 546), al-Bazzar (3305), Abu Bakr al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (948), al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad 'Ali) (262), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1092), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (19/ 59), Ibn Jumay' al-Saydawi in his "Mu'jam" (p. 134), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" (1/ 483), Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 111-112 and 112), and al-Dhahabi in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (1/ 479-480) and "Tadhkirat al-Huffaz" (2/ 579-580), through several routes from Abu 'Attab Sahl bin Hammad, with this chain.
Important point: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi said: "To my knowledge, no one other than Abu 'Attab narrated this hadith from Shu'bah with a connected chain (musnad)."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (1174), and likewise by Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (1093) (and via him by Ibn 'Asakir 33/ 112) by way of Bahz bin Asad. Both of them (al-Tayalisi and Bahz) narrated it from Shu'bah, from Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah, in "mursal" form, without mentioning his father (Qurrah).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For this narration there is a shahid in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, narrated in Musnad Ahmad (7/ 3991), Ibn Hibban (7069) and elsewhere with a "hasan" chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also, the hadith of 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Musnad Ahmad (2/ 920), and its chain is likewise "hasan".
