حدَّثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا علي بن عبد العزيز ومحمد بن غالب قالا: حدَّثنا أبو حُذيفة. وحدثنا دَعْلَج بن أحمد السِّجْزي ببغداد، حدَّثنا عبد العزيز بن معاوية البصري، حدَّثنا أبو حُذيفة، حدَّثنا سفيان الثَّوري، عن منصور، عن هِلال بن يَسَافٍ، عن عبد الله بن ظالم، عن سعيد بن زيد، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "عشرةٌ في الجنة"، فذكر أبا بكر وعمرَ وعثمانَ وعليًّا وطلحةَ والزبيرَ وعبد الرحمن بنَ عوف وسعد بنَ أبي وقاص وسعيدَ بنَ زيد وعبدَ الله بنَ مسعود (1)
هذا حديث تفرَّد بذكر ابن مسعود فيه أبو حُذيفة، وقد احتجَّ البخاريُّ بأبي حذيفة، إلا أنهما لم يحتجا بعبد الله بن ظالم.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ten people are in Paradise." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf, Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, Sa'id bin Zayd and Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them).
In this hadith Abu Hudhayfah is alone in mentioning Ibn Mas'ud. Although Imam Bukhari used Abu Hudhayfah as evidence, the two Shaykhs did not use Abdullah bin Zalim as evidence.

(1) حديث صحيح، لكن بذكر أبي عُبيدة بن الجراح بدل عبد الله بن مسعود، وذكرُ ابن مسعود مما تفرَّد به أبو حذيفة - وهو موسى بن مسعود النَّهدي - كما ذكر المصنِّف بإثره، ولم يذكره غيره من أصحاب سفيان الثوري، ولا ذكره حصين بن عبد الرحمن عن هلال في روايته الآتية برقم (6011).
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih, but with the mention of Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in place of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (as the preserved version).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of Ibn Mas'ud in this narration is something the narrator Abu Hudhayfah (Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi) is alone in, as the author (al-Hakim) mentioned right after it. None of the other students of Sufyan al-Thawri mentioned him, nor did Husayn bin 'Abd al-Rahman mention him in his narration from Hilal, which is coming at number (6011).
وهذا إسناد رجاله لا بأس بهم لكنه اختُلف فيه على هلال بن يساف اختلافًا كثيرًا كما بيَّنه الدارقطني في "العلل" (663)، وجَزَم هو ومِن قبله النسائيُّ في "السنن الكبرى" بإثر الحديث (8135) أنَّ هلال بن يسافٍ لم يسمعه من عبد الله بن ظالم، وأنَّ بينهما رجلًا. وهذا الرجل مبهم مجهول لا يُدرى من هو، لكن روي هذا الحديث عن سعيد بن زيد من غير هذا الوجه بأسانيد أحسنُها ما سيأتي عند المصنف برقم (5971)، ليس في شيء منها ذكر عبد الله بن مسعود.
Technical note: There is no harm in the men of this chain, but there is a great deal of discrepancy over this chain from Hilal bin Yasaf, as al-Daraqutni explained in "al-'Ilal" (663). Al-Daraqutni, and before him al-Nasa'i in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" after hadith number (8135), stated decisively that Hilal bin Yasaf did not hear this narration from 'Abdullah bin Zalim; rather, there is a man between the two of them.
Note: This intermediary (narrator) is unnamed (mubham) and majhul (unknown); it is not known who he is. However, this hadith is also narrated from Sa'id bin Zayd through routes other than this chain, the best of which is the one that will come with the author at number (5971), and none of them mentions 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
وأخرجه أبو داود (4648)، والنسائي (8151) من طريق عبد الله بن إدريس، والنسائي (8136) من طريق عُبيد بن سعيد الأموي، و (8149) من طريق القاسم بن يزيد الجَرْمي، ثلاثتهم عن سفيان الثوري، عن منصور - وهو ابن المعتمر - عن هلال بن يسافٍ، عن فلان بن حيَّان، عن عبد الله بن ظالم، عن سعيد بن يزيد. فزادوا رجلًا بين هلال وابن ظالم، وتابعهم عُبيد الله بن عبد الرحمن الأشجعي في روايته عن سفيان الثوري كما نبَّه عليه أبو داود بإثر الحديث. ولم يذكر أحدٌ منهم ابن مسعود. وأخرجه كذلك أحمد 3/ (1630) عن وكيع، عن سفيان الثوري، عن حصين ومنصور، عن هلال بن يساف، عن سعيد بن زيد. وقال وكيع مرة: قال منصور: عن سعيد بن زيد، وقال مرةً: حُصين عن ابن ظالم عن سعيد بن زيد. وقال وكيع في رواية أحمد عنه في "فضائل الصحابة" (82) و (253): لم يحدّثه منصور عن هلال عن سعيد.

All three of them (Ibn Idris, 'Ubayd and al-Qasim) narrate: from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Mansur (Ibn al-Mu'tamir), from Hilal bin Yasaf, from (an unnamed narrator) so-and-so bin Hayyan, from 'Abdullah bin Zalim, from Sa'id bin Zayd.
Technical note: All of them added a man between Hilal and Ibn Zalim. 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Ashja'i also corroborated them in his narration from Sufyan al-Thawri, as Abu Dawud pointed out after the hadith. None of them mentioned Ibn Mas'ud.
Further references: Ahmad (3/ 1630) narrated it from Waki', from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Husayn and Mansur, from Hilal bin Yasaf, from Sa'id bin Zayd. Waki' once said: "Mansur: from Sa'id bin Zayd", and once said: "Husayn, from Ibn Zalim, from Sa'id bin Zayd". But in Ahmad's narration from him in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (82) and (253), Waki' stated explicitly: "Mansur did not narrate it from Hilal, from Sa'id."

Reference / Source: It was narrated similarly by Ahmad (1629), Ibn Majah (133) and al-Nasa'i (8137, 8162) by way of "Riyah bin al-Harith al-Nakha'i"; and by Ahmad (1631, 1637), Abu Dawud (4649), al-Tirmidhi after (3757), al-Nasa'i (8100, 8147, 8153) and Ibn Hibban (6993) by way of "'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Akhnas". Both of them (Riyah and Ibn al-Akhnas) narrate it from Sa'id bin Zayd, mentioning the nine persons mentioned here, but without mention of Ibn Mas'ud or Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah.
وله طريق أخرى عن سعيد بن زيد عند الطبراني في "الكبير" (356)، وفي "الأوسط" (2009)، وأبي نعيم في "دلائل النبوة" (337)، وفي "معرفة الصحابة" (555) من طريق أبي الطُّفيل عامر بن واثلة، عن سعيد بن زيد، بذكر التسعة، ليس فيهم ابن مسعود ولا أبو عبيدة.
Reference / Source: Another route of it from Sa'id bin Zayd is found in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (356) and "al-Awsat" (2009), and in Abu Nu'aym's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (337) and "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (555), via Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir bin Wathilah. It too mentions nine persons, but Ibn Mas'ud and Abu 'Ubaydah are not among them.
فلم يذكر أبا عبيدة بن الجراح عاشرَهم في حديث سعيد بن زيد في الطرق السالفة عنه إلّا حميدُ بنُ عبد الرحمن في روايته الآتية برقم (5971)، وقد ذكر في بعض طرق ابن الأخنس عن سعيد بن زيد، ولا يصح.

وورد ذكر أبي عبيدة بن الجراح في طرق أخرى عن سعيد بن زيد، لكنها ضعاف كلها، ومن ذلك ما أخرجه ابن سعد 3/ 356، وعنه البلاذُري في "أنساب الأشراف" 10/ 471، من طريق محمد بن السائب الكلبي، عن سعيد بن زيد. والكلبي متروك، ثم إنه لم يُدرك سعيد بن زيد.
Grading: Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah is also mentioned in other routes from Sa'id bin Zayd, but all of them are da'if (weak).
Reference and analysis: Among them is the narration recorded by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 356), and from him by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (10/ 471), by way of Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, from Sa'id bin Zayd. (Its defect is that) al-Kalbi is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator, and moreover he did not live in the time of Sa'id bin Zayd (so there is a break in the chain).

Reference / Source: Likewise al-Daraqutni recorded it in "al-Ghara'ib wa al-Afrad" (as in Ibn Tahir's "Atraf" 5202), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (56), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (25/ 467-468), by way of Muhammad bin Khallad al-Qattan, from 'Abbad bin Suhayb, from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, from Qatadah, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Sa'id bin Zayd.
Status of the narrator: 'Abbad bin Suhayb is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), and the one narrating from him (Muhammad bin Khallad) is majhul (unknown); it is not known who he is.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the mention of Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) among the ten given glad tidings of Paradise is supported by the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as a "shahid", narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (13823), "al-Awsat" (2201) and "al-Saghir" (62); al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/ 156); Ibn 'Asakir (21/ 79-80 and 25/ 468); and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (13/ 253). Its chain is sahih.

Reference and analysis: Among them is the narration recorded by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 356), and from him by al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (10/ 471), by way of Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi, from Sa'id bin Zayd. (Its defect is that) al-Kalbi is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator, and moreover he did not live in the time of Sa'id bin Zayd (so there is a break in the chain).
ومن ذلك ما أخرجه الدارقطني في "الغرائب والأفراد" كما في "أطرافه" لابن طاهر (5202)، وأبو نعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (56)، وابن عساكر و "تاريخ دمشق" 25/ 467 - 468 من طريق محمد بن خلاد القطان الوزان، عن عباد بن صهيب، عن سعيد بن أبي عروبة، عن قَتادةَ، عن: سعيد بن المسيب، عن سعيد بن زيد. وعباد بن صهيب متروك الحديث، والراوي عنه مجهولٌ لا يُدرى من هو.
Reference / Source: Likewise al-Daraqutni recorded it in "al-Ghara'ib wa al-Afrad" (as in Ibn Tahir's "Atraf" 5202), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (56), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (25/ 467-468), by way of Muhammad bin Khallad al-Qattan, from 'Abbad bin Suhayb, from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, from Qatadah, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Sa'id bin Zayd.
Status of the narrator: 'Abbad bin Suhayb is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), and the one narrating from him (Muhammad bin Khallad) is majhul (unknown); it is not known who he is.
لكن يشهد لذكر أبي عبيدة في العشرة حديث ابن عمر عند الطبراني في "الكبير" (13823)، وفي "الأوسط" (2201)، وفي "الصغير" (62)، والخطيب في "تاريخ بغداد" 5/ 156، وابن عساكر 21/ 79 - 80 و 25/ 468، والضياء المقدسي في "المختارة" 13/ (253)، وإسناده صحيح.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, the mention of Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) among the ten given glad tidings of Paradise is supported by the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as a "shahid", narrated by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (13823), "al-Awsat" (2201) and "al-Saghir" (62); al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/ 156); Ibn 'Asakir (21/ 79-80 and 25/ 468); and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (13/ 253). Its chain is sahih.
