It is narrated from Alqamah: I came to Syria and prayed two rak'ahs, then I supplicated: "O Allah, grant me a righteous companion." I met some people and sat with them. Suddenly a man came and sat beside me. I asked: Who is this? The people said: This is Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). I said to him: I had prayed to Allah to grant me a righteous companion, and He has granted me you. He asked: Where are you from? I said: From the people of Kufah. He said: "Is there not among you Ibn Umm Abd (Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud), who was the keeper of the sandals, the pillow and the ablution vessel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? And is there not among you the man (Sayyiduna Ammar) whom Allah protected from Satan by the blessed tongue of His Prophet? And is there not among you the confidant of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (Sayyiduna Hudhayfah), whose secret no one knows besides him?"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. All the chains before it are also sahih, but the two Shaykhs did not record them; I did not comment on them because they were not musnad (connected to the Prophet), whereas this report is musnad.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identification of narrators): Ahmad bin Nasr is "Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Nasr al-Naysaburi al-Labbad", Isra'il is "Ibn Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i", al-Mughirah is "Ibn Miqsam al-Dabbi", Ibrahim is "Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i", and 'Alqamah is "Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i". Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3742) narrated it from Abu Ghassan Malik bin Isma'il, with this chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (45/ 27544) narrated it likewise from Aswad bin 'Amir, from Isra'il. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (27538, 27539), al-Bukhari (3743), al-Nasa'i (8241) and Ibn Hibban (6331) by way of Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj; and by Ibn Hibban (7127) by way of Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid. Both of them (Shu'bah and Jarir) narrate it from al-Mughirah bin Miqsam. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore al-Hakim's istidrak of it is an "oversight" (lapse) on his part. Details of the narration: Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) in his narration named the persons whose qualities Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) described. He said: "The keeper of the pillow" (al-wisad) is 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, "the keeper of the secret" (al-sirr) is Hudhayfah, and the one who was granted protection from Satan is 'Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them). In some routes from Shu'bah, the description of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) reads: "the keeper of the pillow and the tooth-stick (siwak)". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A parallel of this narration (a similar narration) will come later from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) at number (5783), in which Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) additionally mentions Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with them both).
