حدثني أبو بكر أحمد بن بالَوَيهِ، حدَّثنا عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، قال: حدثني أبي، حدَّثنا عبد الرحمن، عن سفيان، عن أبي إسحاق، عن حَبّة العُرَني: أَنَّ ناسًا أتَوا عليًّا، فأثنَوا على عبد الله بن مسعود، فقال: أقولُ فيه مثلَ ما قالُوا وأفضل: قرأ القُرآنَ، وأحلَّ حلالَه وحَرم حرامَه، فقيهٌ في الدِّين، عالمٌ بالسُّنة (1).

It is narrated from Habbah al-Urani that some people came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and praised Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Upon this Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I say about him the same as what these people said, and even better: he read the Qur'an, held its lawful to be lawful and its unlawful to be unlawful; he is a jurist in the religion and a scholar of the Sunnah."

(1) خبر صحيح، وهذا إسناد ضعيف لضعف حَبّة العُرَني، وقد روي نحو هذا عن علي من وجوهٍ أخرى، منها ما سيأتي بالرقم (5478) و (5731). عبد الرحمن: هو ابن مهدي، وسفيان: هو الثوري، وأبو إسحاق: هو عمرو بن عبد الله السَّبيعي.
Grading: (1) This report (text) is "sahih", but this chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of Habbah al-'Urani. However, a similar narration is reported from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through other chains, some of which will come at numbers (5478) and (5731).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identification of narrators): 'Abd al-Rahman is "Ibn Mahdi", Sufyan is "al-Thawri", and Abu Ishaq is "'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i".
وأخرجه ابن سعد 3/ 144، ومن طريقه ابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 33/ 150 عن قبيصة بن عُقبة، عن سفيان الثوري، به.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 144), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (33/ 150), from Qabisah bin 'Uqbah, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
وأخرجه بنحوه ابن سعد 3/ 144، وابن أبي شيبة 12/ 117، والبلاذُري في "أنساب الأشراف" 11/ 221، وابن عساكر 33/ 150 من طريق الأعمش، عن حبة بن جوين العُرني.
Reference / Source: It was narrated with a similar meaning by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 144), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 117), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (11/ 221) and Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 150) by way of al-A'mash, from Habbah bin Juwayn al-'Urani.
وأخرجه ضمن خبر طويل في أسئلةٍ وُجِّهت لعليٍّ ﵁ عن رأيه في جمع من الصحابة وأسئلة أخرى: أحمد بن منيع في "مسنده" كما في "المطالب العالية" لابن حجر (3990)، والطبراني في "الكبير" (6042)، وابن عساكر 21/ 421 - 422، والضياء المقدسي في "المختارة" (494) من طريق ابن جريج قال: حدَّثنا أبو حرب بن أبي الأسود عن أبيه، وقال ابن جريج: وعن رجل عن زاذان أبي عمر، كلاهما عن عليّ. وإسناده عن أبي الأسود صحيح.
Reference / Source: It was narrated within a long report (in which 'Ali was asked about a group of the Companions) by: Ahmad bin Mani' in his "Musnad" (al-Matalib al-'Aliyah: 3990), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6042), Ibn 'Asakir (21/ 421-422) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (494), by way of Ibn Jurayj. Ibn Jurayj said: Abu Harb bin Abi al-Aswad narrated to us from his father; and Ibn Jurayj also said: and from a man, from Zadhan Abu 'Umar. Both of them (Abu al-Aswad and Zadhan) narrate from 'Ali.
Grading: Its chain via Abu al-Aswad is "sahih".
