Jami' bin Shaddad relates: I heard Abdullah bin Mirdas say: "Every Thursday Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand and deliver a sermon to us. He would speak such brief and comprehensive words that we would wish he would lengthen his talk further."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) This report is "sahih", and this chain may possibly be "hasan" on account of 'Abdullah bin Mirdas. Although no one other than Jami' bin Shaddad narrated from him, he is a Successor whom Ibn Hibban mentioned, and he narrated more than one report from Ibn Mas'ud. The like of his report is also narrated from Shaqiq Abu Wa'il. (Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi is Sulayman bin Dawud bin al-Jarud.)
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 145) and al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (11/ 222), through various routes from Shu'bah, with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by what Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah narrated: "'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) used to admonish us every Thursday. A man said to him: O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman! We love your talk and long for it; we would wish that you narrated to us every day (and so on)."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (7/ 4439) and Muslim (2821). It is also in al-Bukhari (70), but without the words "inna nuhibbu hadithaka wa nashtahihi" (we love your talk and long for it).
Note / Clarification: Regarding Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) admonishing his companions every Thursday, see the report of 'Amr bin Maymun al-Awdi which has passed at number (383).
