Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5459

Amr bin Maymun relates that a whole year would pass over Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) without his narrating any hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then one day he narrated a hadith on the authority of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and a state of sorrow and awe came over him, sweat began to drip from his forehead, and he began to say (out of utmost caution): "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said it like this, or something close to this."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: (2) This report is "sahih", and 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi has a "mutaba'ah" (corroboration).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators added two men in its chain between Muslim al-Batin and 'Amr bin Maymun (al-Awdi): Ibrahim bin Yazid bin Sharik al-Taymi and his father. Thus they narrate it as Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from 'Amr bin Maymun (as passed at hadith 383).
General principle: Al-Daraqutni mentioned this discrepancy in "al-'Ilal" (3159) and declared "both narrations sahih". He pointed to the narration in which Muslim al-Batin explicitly states that he heard it from 'Amr bin Maymun (which is in al-Bukhari's al-Tarikh al-Kabir 7/ 268). Al-Daraqutni said: "It seems that Muslim heard this hadith first from Ibrahim al-Taymi (indirectly) and later heard it directly from 'Amr."
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bazzar (1863), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (605), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1450) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (33/ 162) by way of Shu'bah, from Abu al-'Umays.
Details of the narration: Sharik al-Nakha'i also narrated it from Abu al-'Umays (as passed with the author at number 382), but in it Sharik gave the chain thus: from Abu al-'Umays, from Muslim al-Batin, from Abu 'Amr al-Shaybani, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He mentioned "Abu 'Amr al-Shaybani" in place of "'Amr bin Maymun", which al-Daraqutni declared to be his "wahm" (error).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tayalisi (324), Ibn Sa'd (3/ 144), Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/ 547-548), al-Shashi (667), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (8612) and Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 162, 163) by way of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah al-Mas'udi (the brother of Abu al-'Umays); by al-Tabarani (8616), al-Daraqutni in "al-'Ilal" (3159) and Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 163) by way of 'Ammar al-Duhni; and by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 216), al-Bazzar (1862) and al-Tabarani (8615) by way of Sunnah bin Muslim al-Batin. All three of them ('Abd al-Rahman, 'Ammar and Sunnah) narrate it from Muslim al-Batin, from 'Amr bin Maymun, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibrahim bin Muhajir also narrated it from Muslim al-Batin: Musnad Ahmad (6/ 3670), al-Tabarani (8616), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (7/ 109), al-Khatib in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (1/ 297) and Ibn 'Asakir (33/ 164).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Ibrahim bin Muhajir gave the chain thus: from Muslim al-Batin, from "Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami", from Ibn Mas'ud. Al-Daraqutni declared this to be his "wahm" (error).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration has passed with the author at number (381) via Masruq, from Ibn Mas'ud.
