Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5442

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best of you after me is the one who is best to my family." Quraysh said: Muhammad bin Amr told me, from Abu Salamah, that his father (Abd al-Rahman bin Awf) had bequeathed to the Mothers of the Believers a garden which, after him, was sold for forty thousand dinars.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it, and it has an authentic supporting narration (shahid) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is Muhammad bin 'Amr (he is Ibn 'Alqamah al-Laythi), since he is a "hasan al-hadith" narrator. And Ibrahim bin 'Abdullah is "Ibrahim al-Sa'di al-Hafiz".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Sunnah" (1414) (from Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Marwazi), Abu Ya'la (5924) (from Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Harb), Abu Ja'far bin al-Bakhtari in a collection of his works (95) (from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Mansur), Ibn al-A'rabi in his "Mu'jam" (717) (from Muhammad bin Abi al-'Awwam), Abu 'Ali bin Shadhan in his "Juz'" (3), and Abu Nu'aym in "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 294), al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (8/ 219) and al-Maghazili in "Manaqib 'Ali" (171) by way of Yahya bin Ma'in. All five of these narrate it from Quraysh bin Anas, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The story narrated by Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (mentioning the orchard sold for forty thousand) came in the narration of Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Marwazi and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin Mansur joined on (by conjunction) to the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, which gives the false impression that this account is the speech of Abu Hurayrah, whereas in reality it is the speech of Abu Salamah, as is clearly stated in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3750) narrated this story "separately" (on its own) from Ahmad bin 'Uthman al-Basri and Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Habib al-Basri, from Quraysh bin Anas.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is hasan gharib."
Note / Clarification: The remaining narrators, in narrating from Quraysh bin Anas, did not mention this story; rather they confined themselves to the hadith of Abu Hurayrah alone.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, this story is also narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf through another route, which will come after it. Also, the hadith of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) (no. 5439) supports it (as a shahid).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith and the story together are supported by the hadith of Umm Bakr bint al-Miswar bin Makhramah from her father (which has passed with the author at no. 5439). And for the hadith text alone there is a shahid from Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), which has passed at number (5440).
