Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5441

Sayyiduna Ibrahim bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Ibn Awf! You are among the wealthy, and you will enter Paradise crawling. So lend to Allah (spend in His path), and He will free your feet." Ibn Awf said: O Messenger of Allah! What shall I lend to Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give up what you have." He asked: All of it? He said: "Yes." Ibn Awf had just gone out with that intention when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him and said: "Jibril came to me and said: Instruct Ibn Awf to host guests, feed the needy, give to the one who asks, and begin (his spending) with his own dependants, for when he does that, it will be a means of purifying the rest of his wealth."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The main reason for this weakness is the presence of the narrator "Khalid bin Yazid bin Abi Malik" (he is Khalid bin Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Malik al-Shami). Because of this narrator al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Reference / Source: Among the other scholars who declared this hadith weak because of Khalid are: al-Hafiz al-'Iraqi in "Takhrij Ahadith Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din" (3/ 266), al-Haythami in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" (9/ 155), Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani in "Mukhtasar Zawa'id Musnad al-Bazzar" (1953) and "al-Qawl al-Musaddad" (p. 25), al-Sakhawi in "al-Ajwibah al-Mardiyyah" (2/ 148, 149 and 3/ 281), and others. Indeed, al-Haythami and Ibn Hajar even said: "Nothing on this subject is established."
General principle: Before them, a group of imams declared weak all the hadiths that mention 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) entering Paradise "crawling" (zahfan).
Important point: Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (as Ibn al-Jawzi quoted in "al-Mawdu'at"), commenting on the narration of 'Umarah bin Zadhan (from Thabit, from Anas), which mentions entering Paradise "habwan" (crawling on hands and knees) (no. 803), said: "This hadith is a lie and munkar, and 'Umarah narrates munkar hadiths." Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Qawl al-Musaddad" (p. 25): "The testimony of Imam Ahmad that it is a lie suffices us." This hadith of Anas can be seen in "Musnad Ahmad" (41/ 24842).
Grading: Ibn al-Jawzi said: "This hadith is not sahih."
Note / Clarification: It is far from the station of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who is among the ten given the glad tidings of Paradise, that his wealth should hold him back from coming first, because amassing wealth is (legally) permissible. What is blameworthy is only wealth earned in a wrongful way or wealth from which an obligatory due (zakah and the like) is withheld, and 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf is free of both of these conditions. (The proof is that) Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) left three hundred loads (himl) of gold, and likewise al-Zubayr and other Companions also left wealth. Had they known that this (keeping wealth) was blameworthy, they would have spent all of it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz al-Mundhiri said in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib": The narrations that 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) will enter Paradise crawling because of the abundance of his wealth are reported through several chains and from a group of Companions, but even the "best chain" among them is not free of criticism, and none of them on its own reaches the level of "hasan".
General principle: His wealth was of the kind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) described: "How excellent is good wealth for a good man." So how could his ranks in the Hereafter be lowered, or how could he fall behind the other wealthy people of this Ummah, when no such warning has come concerning the other wealthy people? Yes, it is absolutely correct that the poor of this Ummah will precede its wealthy. And Allah knows best.
Important point: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said in "Majmu' al-Fatawa" (11/ 128): "What is narrated, that Ibn 'Awf will enter Paradise crawling, is fabricated (mawdu') speech with no basis."
Reference / Source: (Research): We say: this hadith was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 122), Ibn Zanjawayh in "al-Amwal" (1366), al-Bazzar (1005), al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1616), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/ 12), Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/ 99 and 8/ 334), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3064) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (35/ 263 to 265 and 51/ 216), through various routes from Abu Ayyub Sulayman bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi, with this chain.
