Note / Clarification: (2) This chain is written thus in the manuscripts, but it has no connection either with the preceding text or with the following text. Its subject must surely relate to the virtues of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). If that is the case, then in our view what the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him) intended (and Allah knows best) is the report which Ibn Sa'd narrated in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 319) by way of Ibrahim bin Sa'd, from Salih bin Kaysan, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim bin 'Abdullah.
Details of the narration: 'Abdullah bin 'Umar said: Shortly before the death of 'Umar, a group came to him, including 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, 'Uthman, 'Ali, al-Zubayr and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with them). 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have considered the matter of the caliphate, and I found no discord among the people except what may be among you. The matter is entrusted only to these six (6): 'Abd al-Rahman, 'Uthman, 'Ali, al-Zubayr, Talhah and Sa'd." (Talhah was absent at the time.) At the end of the story Salim said: I asked 'Abdullah (bin 'Umar): "Did he name 'Abd al-Rahman before 'Ali?" He said: "Yes, by Allah."
Grading: Its men (narrators) are thiqah.
