Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) is a disciple of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)

أخبرنا عبد الله بن إسحاق الخُراساني العَدْل، حدَّثنا عبد الله بن رَوح المَدائني، حدَّثنا يزيد بن هارون، أخبرنا أبو المُعلَّى الجَزَري، عن ميمون بن مِهْران، عن ابن عمر، عن علي بن أبي طالب: أنَّ عبد الرحمن بن عوف قال لأصحاب الشُّورى: هل لكم أن أختارَ لكم وأنتقِلَ منها؟ فقال عليٌّ: أنا أولُ مَن رَضِي، فإني سمعتُ رسولَ الله ﷺ يقولُ لك: "أنت أمينٌ في أهل السماء، أمينٌ في أهل الأرض" (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the members of the Shura: Are you willing that I choose (the caliph) for you and withdraw from the contest myself? Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am the first to agree to this proposal, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say about you: "You are trustworthy among the people of the heavens, and trustworthy among the people of the earth."

(1) إسناده ضعيف جدًّا من أجل أبي المُعلَّى الجَزَري - وهو فُرات بن السائب - فقد تركوه كما قال الذهبي في "تلخيصه".
Grading: (1) This chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is Abu al-Mu'alla al-Jazari, whose name is Furat bin al-Sa'ib; the hadith scholars abandoned him (he is matruk), as al-Dhahabi stated in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
وأخرجه ابن سعد 3/ 124، وأحمد بن منيع في "مسنده" كما في "المطالب العالية" للحافظ ابن حجر (3977)، والحارث بن أبي أسامة كما في "الإصابة" للحافظ ابن حجر 4/ 348، والهيثم بن كليب الشاشي في "مسنده" كما في "سير أعلام النبلاء" للحافظ الذهبي 1/ 87، وابن بَطة في "الإبانة" 8/ 133، وأبو نُعيم الأصبهاني في "الحلية" 1/ 98، وفي "معرفة الصحابة" (475)، وفي "فضائل الخلفاء الراشدين" (118)، وابن عبد البر في "الاستيعاب" (ص 444)، والخطيب البغدادي في "موضح أوهام الجمع والتفريق" 20/ 321 - 322، وابن عساكر 35/ 290 - 291 من طرق عن يزيد بن هارون، بهذا الإسناد. لكنهم قالوا جميعًا في رواياتهم عن ابن عمر: أنَّ عبد الرحمن بن عوف … جعلوه من مسند ابن عمر.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/ 124), Ahmad bin Mani' in his "Musnad" (al-Matalib al-'Aliyah: 3977), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (al-Isabah: 4/ 348), al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (Siyar A'lam al-Nubala': 1/ 87), Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah" (8/ 133), Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 98), "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (475) and "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (118), Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 444), al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Mudih Awham al-Jam' wa al-Tafriq" (20/ 321-322) and Ibn 'Asakir (35/ 290-291), through various routes from Yazid bin Harun, with this chain.
Important point: But all of these scholars reported it in their narrations as part of the Musnad of "Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)": that 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) (i.e. the actual narrator is Ibn 'Umar).
