(1). Sa'd bin Ibrahim narrates from his father, who said: I saw Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) at the funeral of Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said (with admiration and love): "O Ibn Awf! Go, in a state where your lap is full of good deeds and not the slightest bit of them has diminished."

Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the mention here of "Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas" is an error (wahm), because what is preserved (mahfuz) is that the report is about Amr bin al-As. So it came in Ahmad bin Hanbal's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1254), in the narration of Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Ja'far al-Qati'i, from Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, from his father. So the error here is either from Abu Bakr bin Ishaq or from the author (al-Hakim) himself; and Allah knows best. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 102 and 12/ 95) recorded it from Ghundar Muhammad bin Ja'far with this same chain, and mentioned Amr bin al-As. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise Ibrahim bin Sa'd narrated it, in Ibn Sa'd (3/ 126), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (263) and Ibn Asakir (35/ 300-301), from his father Sa'd bin Ibrahim with this chain, and mentioned Amr bin al-As. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 95) recorded it via Mis'ar, from Sa'd bin Ibrahim: that Amr bin al-As said … Details of the narration: He mentioned it thus as "mursal". Note / Clarification: His words "lam yataghadghad" mean: "it was not diminished". The intended meaning is that he did not become involved in any office of authority or work that would diminish the reward due to him, so he left this world safe, with nothing having damaged his religion. Ibn al-Athir said this in "al-Nihayah" under the entries (b-t-n) and (gh-d-gh-d).
