Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5405

Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abza narrates from his father: When people became embroiled in the affair (turmoil) of Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), I said to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abu al-Mundhir, what is the way out of this turmoil? He said: "The Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet. Whatever becomes clear to you, act upon it, and whatever is doubtful to you, entrust it to the one who knows it (Allah)."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This chain is "hasan" because of "al-Sari bin Yahya al-Tamimi" (Ibn al-Sari, the nephew of Hannad) and "Abd Allah bin Abd al-Rahman bin Abza"; both of them are saduq and hasan in hadith.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the mention here by Ubayy of "the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)" occurs only in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration. "Sufyan" is Ibn Sa'id al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam recorded it in "Gharib al-Hadith" (3/ 424) from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi; Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 211) from Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah; and al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/ 482) and his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (2/ 39-40), and through him Ibn Hazm in "al-Ihkam fi Usul al-Ahkam" (6/ 93) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (7/ 13-314 and 314), from Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi. All three of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri with this chain.
Details of the narration: But the wording of Abu Usamah and al-Firyabi is: "The Book of Allah; what becomes clear to you, act upon it and benefit from it, and what is unclear to you, entrust it to the one who knows it." The words "and benefit from it" are not in al-Firyabi's narration. And Abu Ubayd did not mention the full wording of Ibn Mahdi.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The like of it is established as "marfu'" from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as Ahmad (11/ 6702, 6741) recorded from the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amr bin al-As, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The Qur'an was not revealed with one part of it belying another; rather, one part of it confirms another. So what you know of it, speak (of it), and what you do not know, entrust it to the one who knows it."
Grading: Its chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise from Abu Hurayrah as marfu' in Ahmad (13/ 7989) and Ibn Hibban (74), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Disputing about the Qur'an is disbelief (three times). What you recognise of it, act upon it, and what you do not know of it, refer it back to the one who knows it."
Grading: And its chain is sahih.
