It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution, washing the limbs twice each.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Its supporting report is the well-known mursal narration of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution once each and said: "This is the amount of ablution without which there is no option," then performed ablution twice each and said: "This is the moderate ablution for which Allah doubles the reward."

Important point: In the original manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" there is a blank space here the length of one line; perhaps a third chain was meant to be there, but al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (15/ 175), mentioned only two chains of Imam al-Hakim.
Grading: This is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and this chain is "hasan" because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Thabit bin Thawban. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (13/ 7877, 14/ 8762), Abu Dawud (136), al-Tirmidhi (43) and Ibn Hibban (1094) narrated it through Zayd bin al-Hubab. (158). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a supporting report (shahid): the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Sahih al-Bukhari (158).
Grading: Its chain is "da'if jiddan" (very weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is a break (inqita') between Mu'awiyah bin Qurrah and Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); moreover, its narrator 'Abd al-Rahim bin Zayd is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned), and his father (Zayd al-'Ammi) is also weak.
