It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and wiped the inner and outer parts of his ears, and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to command that too. Za'idah bin Qudamah is a trustworthy and reliable narrator who narrated this report from Sufyan al-Thawri as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet), while others narrated it as mawquf (stopping at the Companion).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts and the printed edition, "Muhammad bin 'Amr" is written here, which is wrong; it has been corrected from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (1/ 603). Important point: In dozens of other places in the author's (al-Hakim's) work, this chain appears entirely correctly.
Grading: Its chain is outwardly sahih, but what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in it is that this act is that of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, which he then attributed to 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): It was narrated thus with Imam al-Bayhaqi (al-Sunan 1/ 64) through the route of Husayn bin Hafs from Sufyan al-Thawri, and several other trustworthy narrators narrated it thus from Humayd al-Tawil. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/ 18), Abu 'Ubayd (al-Tuhur 357), al-Tahawi (Ma'ani al-Athar 1/ 34), al-Daraqutni (373) and al-Bayhaqi (1/ 64) narrated it from Humayd as "mawquf". Important point: Imam al-Bayhaqi stated explicitly in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (731) that this mawquf route is the preserved (correct) one. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The narration of Za'idah bin Qudamah found with the author is corroborated by 'Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Ma'rifah" (731). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Bayhaqi judged 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi to have erred (wahm) in this narration. (547). Details of the narration: The narration about wiping the outer and inner sides of the ears is also reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through several other routes. Reference / Source: For this, see the earlier number (534) and the coming narration (547). (1078). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In this chapter there is the narration of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in al-Tirmidhi (36), Ibn Majah (439), al-Nasa'i (1078) and Ibn Hibban (1078). (442). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From al-Miqdam bin Ma'dikarib (may Allah be pleased with him), this narration is reported in Musnad Ahmad (28/ 17188), Abu Dawud (121, 123) and Ibn Majah (442). 30/ (18537). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From al-Bara' bin 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), it is reported in Musnad Ahmad (30/ 18537). (135). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), it is reported in Abu Dawud (135).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The word "ghayruhu" had dropped out of the manuscripts; it has been restored from Imam al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis".
