Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of al-Aqabah in Persia, when the people had scattered, al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and mounted his horse while it was limping (from injury). Then he said to his companions: "What a bad habit you have given your adversaries over you (that they are prevailing over you)!" Then he launched a full attack on the enemy, until Allah granted the Muslims victory, and al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred that day. Musa bin Harun said: Al-Bara' bin Malik was martyred at Tustar (in Persia) in the year 21 AH.
Mention of the virtues of al-Nu'man bin Muqarrin al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) This word was written in manuscripts (S), (M), (B) and in the margin of (Z) as "barha"; in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" it is dotted as "tarja", and in the printed edition "tuzja". What has been adopted (in the text) from manuscript (Z) agrees with "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" of Ibn Sa'd (4/ 332 and 9/ 17). The meaning is: his horse was suffering in the underside of its hoof, or its hoof had worn thin from much walking. The word in our other manuscripts may also be correct if read "tuzja" (with ta', then zay, then jim), meaning: it was being driven on gently, and Allah knows best.
Grading: (2) This chain is "very weak" (da'if jiddan) because of "Umar bin Hafs" (Abu Hafs al-Abdi), who is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith). The chain before it is more sound than it. Note / Clarification: "Thabit" refers to: Ibn Aslam al-Bunani. Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (4/ 332 and 9/ 17) from Umar bin Hafs, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): A story like this one, and the statement attributed here to al-Bara' bin Malik, is authentically reported from Thabit, from Anas bin Malik, but about "Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas" on the day of al-Yamamah, and not in Persia (Faris), as passed at number (5106), and its chain is sahih. It seems that this is the original story, and then the matter became confused for Hafs bin Umar al-Abdi, so one hadith got mixed into another.
