Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How many weak and downtrodden people there are, possessing only two worn-out garments, yet if they were to swear an oath by Allah (relying on Him for something), Allah would certainly fulfil their oath; al-Bara' bin Malik is one of them." Then, when al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) confronted an army of the polytheists, and the polytheists had inflicted heavy losses on the Muslims, the Companions said: O Bara'! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that if you swear an oath by Allah, He will fulfil it; so swear an oath by your Lord (that we will be granted victory). So al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O my Lord! I swear an oath by You that You will make them turn their backs to us (that is, grant us victory)." Then, when they met at Qantarah al-Sus (the bridge of al-Sus), and there again the Muslims suffered severely, the people said again: O Bara'! Swear an oath by your Lord. Al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) supplicated: "O my Lord! I swear an oath by You that You will make them turn their backs to us, and that You will join me with my Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, grant me martyrdom)." So the enemy was defeated, and al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is "hasan" (good), if Allah wills, because of "Muhammad bin Uzayz al-Ayli" and "Salamah bin Rawh al-Ayli". Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (6339), Ibn al-Mundhir in "al-Awsat" (8884), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (676), Abu Bakr al-Ajurri in "al-Ghuraba'" (28), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (3/ 314), al-Lalaka'i in "Karamat al-Awliya'" (106), Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/ 6-7), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 368), "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10001) and "al-I'tiqad" (pp. 315-316), and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (4/ 239) recorded it through several routes from Muhammad bin Uzayz, with this same chain. Details of the narration: Some of them confined themselves to the "marfu'" (Prophetic) part only, and some of those who confined themselves to the marfu' part do not mention in it the words "minhum al-Bara' bin Malik" (among them is al-Bara' bin Malik). Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3854) and others also recorded it in abridged form (with the marfu' part) through the route of Thabit al-Bunani and Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Anas bin Malik. Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib". Grading: We (the editors) say: its chain is "jayyid" (good) from the side of Thabit al-Bunani. (6931). Details of the narration: Its marfu' part has also been narrated from Anas bin Malik through other chains in which al-Bara' bin Malik is not mentioned. Reference / Source: See: Ahmad (19/ 12476, 20/ 12704), al-Bukhari (2703), Muslim (1675), Abu Dawud (4595), Ibn Majah (2649) and al-Nasa'i (6931). Note / Clarification: "dhi timrayn" (with kasrah on the ta' and sukun on the mim): that is, (wearing) two worn-out garments. Note / Clarification: "mutada'af": al-Nawawi said in "Sharh Muslim" (17/ 186-187): It has been recorded with both fathah and kasrah on the 'ayn, and fathah is the well-known reading. Its meaning is: people regard him as weak, despise him and domineer over him because of his weak condition in this world. With kasrah its meaning is: humble, lowly, obscure, one who keeps himself low. Note / Clarification: "al-Sus": a town in the district of al-Ahwaz in the land of Khuzistan, which was conquered at the hands of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him).
