Shaqiq bin Salamah relates: I saw Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) perform ablution. He washed his face, sniffed water into his nose and rinsed his mouth three times, wiped his head and ears, outside and inside, and passed his fingers through his beard three times when washing his face, before washing his feet. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do just as you have seen me do.
The two Shaykhs agreed on recording routes of the hadith of Uthman describing his ablution, but they did not mention combing through the beard three times in their narrations. This chain is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs used all its narrators as evidence except Amir bin Shaqiq, and no criticism of him is known. Its supporting report on combing through the beard is also narrated from Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir, Sayyiduna Anas and Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with them).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan on account of other supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The hadith scholars differ about its narrator 'Amir bin Shaqiq; however, Imam al-Bukhari declared it hasan, as Imam al-Tirmidhi quoted from Imam al-Bukhari in his book "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (19); he gave this ruling after narrating it through the route of 'Abd al-Razzaq bin Hammam. Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Majah (430) and Imam al-Tirmidhi in his "Sunan" (31) narrated it through two routes from 'Abd al-Razzaq. Details of the narration: Both of them confined themselves to mentioning only the running of the fingers through the beard (takhlil). Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih". Reference / Source: Imam Ibn Hibban narrated it (1081) through 'Abd Allah bin Numayr, from Isra'il bin Yunus, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In support of this narration there is the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) recorded in "Musnad Ahmad" 43/ (25970); its other supporting reports can also be seen there.
