It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sniff water into the nose thoroughly and blow it out, two or three times."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the original manuscripts we have, the name is written thus (Qariz bin 'Abd al-Rahman), but in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (8/ 166) it is "Qariz bin Shaybah", and this is correct, as found in all the other sources of takhrij. There is no narrator named "Qariz bin 'Abd al-Rahman" in the books of narrators, so this is either an error (wahm) of the author or a mistake of later copyists.

Grading: This chain is hasan because of Khalid bin Makhlad al-Qatawani and Qariz bin Shaybah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (3/ 2011, 5/ 2887, 3296), Abu Dawud (141), Ibn Majah (408) and al-Nasa'i (97) narrated it through various routes from Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn Abi Dhi'b, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: "Al-istinthar" means putting water into the nose and expelling it with the breath, cleaning the nose.
