Abdullah bin Tha'labah bin Su'ayr narrates from his father, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) made Sadaqat al-Fitr obligatory on the young and old alike: one sa' of dates or two mudd (half a sa') of wheat.
Most of Imam al-Zuhri's students narrated this hadith from him (al-Zuhri), from Abdullah bin Tha'labah, directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and did not mention his father in it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", except for the statement: "or two mudds of wheat", as we explained under the previous narration. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ashras and Bahr bin Kaniz (al-Saqqa') are both "weak" in hadith, but both have been corroborated. However, the hadith is "defective" (mu'all) in both its chain and its text, as has already passed.
