Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The word "an" dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B), which gave the false impression that the attribution "al-Zuhri" belongs to Bakr (bin Wa'il), whereas Bakr is Taymi, not Zuhri, and the hadith (in fact) is that of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi". The narrators of this chain are trustworthy (thiqah), but there is disagreement on al-Zuhri concerning its chain and text, as explained in "Musnad Ahmad" (39/ 23664) and "Sunan Abi Dawud" (1619).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, it has a supporting report (shahid) in the hadiths of Ibn 'Umar and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with them) in the "Two Sahihs".
Note / Clarification: "Hammam" refers to Ibn Yahya al-'Awdhi.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1620) recorded it from Muhammad bin Yahya al-Naysaburi (al-Dhuhli al-Hafiz), from Musa bin Isma'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1620) also recorded it by way of 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri', from Hammam bin Yahya, from Bakr bin Wa'il, from al-Zuhri, from Tha'labah bin 'Abd Allah or 'Abd Allah bin Tha'labah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He narrated it thus without mentioning (the Companion's) father, and added to the text of the hadith: "or a sa' of wheat between two people (i.e. half a sa' each)". This has the same meaning as what Bahr bin Kaniz added from al-Zuhri in the following narration. This addition is "munkar", as the hadiths of Ibn 'Umar and Abu Sa'id make clear, for they indicate that agreement on giving wheat (burr/qamh) (for Zakat al-Fitr) came about only after the conquest of al-Sham, that is, after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when the Companions made two mudds of wheat (half a sa') equal to one sa' of dates or barley (a sa' being four mudds).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (39/ 23664) recorded it from 'Affan bin Muslim, and Abu Dawud (1619) from Musaddad and Sulayman bin Dawud al-'Ataki. All three of them narrate it from Hammad bin Zayd, from al-Nu'man bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri. 'Affan said: "from Ibn Tha'labah bin Abi Su'ayr, from his father"; Musaddad said: "from Tha'labah bin 'Abd Allah bin Abi Su'ayr, from his father"; and Sulayman bin Dawud said: "from 'Abd Allah bin Tha'lab (or Tha'labah bin 'Abd Allah) bin Abi Su'ayr, from his father".
Details of the narration: Al-Nu'man bin Rashid likewise added to the text of the hadith: "a sa' of wheat on behalf of every two", and also added: "male or female", and further added: "As for your rich man, Allah will purify him, and as for your poor man, Allah will return to him more than he gave." Before that, 'Affan and Sulayman also added the words: "rich or poor".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (39/ 23663) and Abu Dawud (1621) recorded it by way of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ibn Shihab said: 'Abd Allah bin Tha'labah said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people two days before (Eid) al-Fitr," with the same meaning as the narration of 'Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' from Hammam in Abu Dawud, with the added words: "a sa' of wheat between two people."
Reference / Source: This narration will come after it by way of Bahr bin Kaniz, from al-Zuhri, from 'Abd Allah bin Tha'labah, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): None of these additions referred to occur in the hadiths of Ibn 'Umar and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in the "Two Sahihs", except the addition "male or female", which occurs in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Bukhari (1503, 1504) and Muslim (984) recorded it like the narration of the author (al-Hakim) here, with the addition "male or female". See further what has passed under numbers (1505), (1506) and (1511).
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), al-Bukhari (1505, 1506, 1508, 1510) and Muslim (985) recorded it. In some of Muslim's narrations the wording (which is the most complete) is: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us, we used to give Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of every young and old, free or slave: a sa' of food, or a sa' of dried curd (aqit), or a sa' of barley, or a sa' of dates, or a sa' of raisins. We continued to give it thus until Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan came to us for Hajj or 'Umrah and addressed the people from the pulpit. Among what he said to the people was: 'I think that two mudds of the wheat of al-Sham equal a sa' of dates.' So the people adopted that." And in a narration in Muslim: "until (the time of) Mu'awiyah came, and he considered two mudds of wheat equal to a sa' of dates."
Note / Clarification: "al-Burr" and "al-Samra'" are both names for wheat, which is also called "hintah". See further what has passed under number (1495). Abu Sa'id added in his hadith "dried curd, raisins and food (ta'am)".
Note / Clarification: (1) In our manuscripts this name was corrupted to "al-Sa'idi"; it has been corrected from the other places where the author narrated from this same teacher. His name is "Muhammad bin Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak", and "al-Sha'iri" is an attribution to barley (sha'ir).
