It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of Muzdalifah. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off from there (towards Mina), he said: "O people, keep to calm and dignity, for righteousness does not lie in making horses and camels run (fast)."

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, except for the statement: "that he was the one riding behind (radif) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of Jam' (Muzdalifah)." Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is very weak because of "al-Hasan bin 'Umarah". He erred (wahm) in both its chain and its text. His error in the chain is that he mentioned "Tawus", whereas it is narrated by al-Hakam bin 'Utaybah from Miqsam from Ibn 'Abbas (as passed under number 1727). His error in the text is that he said: "from Ibn 'Abbas, that he was the one riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the night of Muzdalifah", whereas what is known is that the one riding behind him on the night of Muzdalifah (i.e. from 'Arafah to Muzdalifah) was Usamah bin Zayd. Al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (3/ 201): What is widely reported from Ibn 'Abbas is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated Usamah behind him from 'Arafah to Jam' (Muzdalifah); likewise Usamah said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him, and I said: 'The prayer!' He said: 'The prayer is ahead of you.'" Then he seated al-Fadl behind him from Jam' to Mina … then he mentioned it from Ibn 'Abbas. Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari recorded it in his "Sahih" (1671) by way of 'Amr bin Abi 'Amr (the freed slave of al-Muttalib), from Sa'id bin Jubayr: Ibn 'Abbas narrated to me that he set off with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of 'Arafah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard behind him loud shouting, beating and the noise of camels, so he pointed at them with his whip and said: "O people, keep to calm (sakinah), for righteousness does not lie in hastening (the mounts)." Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus it does not mention that Ibn 'Abbas was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor that he himself heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say it. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar mentioned in "Fath al-Bari" (5/ 511), in his commentary on hadith (1666), that Muslim narrated by way of 'Ata' from Ibn 'Abbas from Usamah, in the course of a hadith, that he said: "He kept going at his easy pace until he reached Jam'." Al-Hafiz said: This indicates that Ibn 'Abbas took it from Usamah. We (the editors) say: This is also indicated by the narration of Miqsam from Ibn 'Abbas from Usamah (number 1727), and by the narration of Qays bin Sa'd from 'Ata' bin Abi Rabah from Ibn 'Abbas from Usamah in Ahmad (36/ 21756) and elsewhere. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (4001) recorded it by way of Abu Ghatafan bin Tarif, that he heard Ibn 'Abbas say: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, he pulled in the rein of his she-camel so tightly that her head almost touched the front of the saddle, while saying to the people: 'Calm, calm!' on the evening of 'Arafah." This narration likewise does not mention riding behind (irtidaf).
