Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5280

Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his son that on the Day of Arafah, al-Fadl (bin Abbas) was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and there was a crowd of people around the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the people became very many, I thought: al-Fadl will tell me what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did. Al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off (from Arafat), and the people set off with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding the rein of his camel and calling out to the people: "Keep to dignity and calm." Then when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Muzdalifah, he dismounted there and offered the Maghrib and Isha prayers together. Then when dawn broke he offered the morning prayer, and stayed at al-Mash'ar al-Haram in Muzdalifah. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) set off from there and the people set off with him (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) was holding his camel's head and saying: "O people, keep to dignity and calm," until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the valley of Muhassir, he hastened his mount a little and began saying: "Use small pebbles."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, since narrators other than Abu al-Zubayr have also narrated it from Abu Ma'bad, but the two of them did not record it with these words; whereas the hadith of his brother Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is narrated in the "Sahihayn" through Ata and Abu Ma'bad with these words: "Keep to calm," and that he was stoning the Jamrah; but the two of them did not record this present chain.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: "Abu Isma'il Muhammad bin Isma'il" refers to Ibn Yusuf al-Tirmidhi; "Abu Bakr" refers to 'Abd al-Hamid bin Abi Uways; "Yahya bin Sa'id" refers to al-Ansari; and "Abu al-Zubayr" refers to Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus al-Makki.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But what occurs here, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated al-Fadl behind him (on his mount) on the day of 'Arafah, is "gharib" (unusual), because what is widely known - as al-Bukhari reported from Ibn 'Abbas in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (3/ 201) - is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seated Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) behind him from 'Arafah to Muzdalifah (Jam'). Likewise Usamah himself said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seated me behind him, and I said: 'The prayer!' He said: 'The prayer is ahead of you.'" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) seated al-Fadl behind him from Muzdalifah to Mina. Then al-Bukhari narrated it with a chain from Ibn 'Abbas: that Usamah rode behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from 'Arafah to Muzdalifah, then he seated al-Fadl behind him from Muzdalifah to Mina.
Important point: We (the editors) say: unless al-Fadl (may Allah be pleased with him) had first ridden behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the daytime, when his father al-'Abbas saw him doing so (and that is how it was), then al-'Abbas left, and after that, when he set out for Muzdalifah at nightfall, al-Fadl got down from the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Usamah rode behind him, while al-Fadl kept close to the two of them (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Usamah) as they rode; in this way al-Fadl became aware of the details of what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (5/ 126) recorded it from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Tahir al-Silafi recorded it in "al-Mashyakhah al-Baghdadiyyah" (50) by way of Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Shaybah al-Bazzar, from Raja' bin Murajja al-Naysaburi, from Ayyub bin Sulayman, in abridged form, mentioning only the combining of the two prayers at Muzdalifah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim recorded it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (371), al-Bazzar (2163), and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (18/ 690), by way of Isma'il bin Abi Uways, from his brother Abu Bakr, with this chain. Abu Musa al-Madini said: "This is a sahih hadith."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We (the editors) say: In al-Bazzar's narration the mention of "al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib" between 'Abd Allah bin al-'Abbas and his brother al-Fadl has dropped out, which is an error (wahm) in the narration of Isma'il bin Abi Uways. Although 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas did hear this report from his brother, in this wording it is the narration of al-'Abbas from his son al-Fadl.
Reference / Source: As for the narration of 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas from his brother, it was recorded by Imam Ahmad (3/ 1794, 1821), Muslim (1282) and al-Nasa'i (4050) by way of Ibn Jurayj; by Ahmad (1796), Muslim (1282), al-Nasa'i (4042) and Ibn Hibban (3872) by way of al-Layth bin Sa'd; and by Ibn Hibban (3855) by way of 'Amr (continued on the next line)
Details of the narration: bin al-Harith. All three of them (Ibn Jurayj, al-Layth and 'Amr) narrate it from Abu al-Zubayr, from Abu Ma'bad, from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas, from his brother al-Fadl bin 'Abbas. It contains no mention of al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib, and some of these narrators add wording beyond others.

Details of the narration: (1) The hadith of 'Ata' (bin Abi Rabah) from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas from his brother al-Fadl is in al-Bukhari (1685) and Muslim (1281/ 267), but it mentions only "reciting the talbiyah until he stoned the Jamrah". As for "the command to (keep) calm (sakinah)", it is found only in Muslim, not in al-Bukhari, from the hadith of Abu Ma'bad from 'Abd Allah bin 'Abbas from his brother, as has passed in the takhrij of the hadith.
