Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5282

Mus'ab bin Abdullah al-Zubayri says that it is said about Shurahbil bin Hasanah that his mother was married to Sufyan bin Ma'mar and had emigrated with Sufyan. As for Shurahbil, he was the son of Abdullah bin Amr bin al-Muta', and was from Yemen. This Sufyan mentioned is in fact Jamil bin Ma'mar, who was called "Dhu al-Qalbayn" (the man with two hearts) because of his intelligence, until Allah Almighty revealed (in refutation of him) this verse: "Allah has not made for any man two hearts within his breast" [Surah al-Ahzab: 4]. He took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Battle of Hunayn, and Shurahbil bin Hasanah died on the day of the Battle of Yarmuk in the year 18 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In our manuscripts this was corrupted to "Abu"; the correction is from "Nasab Quraysh" (Mus'ab al-Zubayri, p. 395), where it says: "As for Shurahbil's father, he is 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr bin al-Muta'." Likewise al-Zubayr bin Bakkar also named him (Tarikh Dimashq 22/ 467). So he and his uncle Mus'ab agree on Shurahbil's name, although according to most narrators Shurahbil's kunyah is "Abu 'Abd Allah".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Mus'ab bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri named him thus, and al-Zubayr bin Bakkar and Ibn Hazm agreed with him, whereas this is contrary to the view of the other biographers, who said: "Shurahbil bin 'Abd Allah bin al-Muta' bin 'Amr" (i.e. placing al-Muta' before 'Amr). And Allah knows best.

Reference / Source: (1) This is in "Nasab Quraysh" (Mus'ab al-Zubayri), but without mention of Shurahbil's death. There Mus'ab said: "Hasanah (to whom Shurahbil is attributed) was married to Sufyan bin Ma'mar al-Jumahi, and Sufyan and Hasanah had adopted Shurahbil; he was not the actual son of either of them." This statement contradicts Mus'ab's statement here, where he declared Hasanah to be his mother, which agrees with the view of the other biographers. And Allah knows best.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A glaring error has occurred here in mentioning Shurahbil's death, namely the statement: "He died on the day of Yarmuk in the year 18 AH." Yet no one has said that the Battle of Yarmuk took place in 18 AH. It is known that Shurahbil died in the Plague of 'Amwas in 18 AH. Perhaps the words "the day of Yarmuk" are a slip of the pen, and Allah knows best. Its cause may be that Shurahbil was one of the commanders of the Muslim army at Yarmuk, so the pen slipped towards Yarmuk, whereas what was meant was the Plague of 'Amwas, during which a sermon of Shurahbil is also narrated, which will come under number (5288).
