حدثني علي بن حَمْشَاذَ، حدثنا عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، حدثني أبي، حدثنا عبد الرزاق، أخبرنا معمر، عن الزُّهْري، عن ابن كعب بن مالك، قال: كان معاذُ بن جَبَل شابًا جميلًا سَمْحًا من خير شَبابِ قَومِه، لا يُسأل شيئًا إلَّا أعطاهُ، حتى ادَّانَ دَينًا أغلَقَ مالَه (1). It is narrated from the son of Ka'b bin Malik that Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was an extremely handsome and generous young man, one of the best young men of his people. Whatever he was asked for, he would give it, until he fell so deeply into debt that all his wealth was used up in paying it off.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain has been criticised (maqal), as explained under number (2379). وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" 20/ (44)، وعنه أبو نُعيم في "الحلية" 1/ 23 عن عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، بهذا الإسناد. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (20/(44)), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/23), from 'Abdullah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal, with this chain.
