Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5258

Abu Idris al-Khawlani says: I entered the mosque of Damascus and saw there a man whose front teeth were shining and who was mostly silent. Whenever the people differed about something, they would refer it to him and go away satisfied, acting upon his opinion. I asked about him and was told that this was Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).

Grading: (3) All its narrators are trustworthy, but there is a difference of opinion over whether Abu Idris al-Khawlani ('A'idhullah bin 'Abdullah) heard from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him).
Details of the narration: Its details will come under narration number (7502), where the author (al-Hakim) has cited the complete hadith and all its routes.

Note / Clarification: "Asnaduhu ilayhi" means: the people referred the matter to him and, trusting him, entrusted the decision to him.
Note / Clarification: "Sadaru 'an ra'yihi" means: the people did what he commanded and carried out what he advised them.
