أخبرني إسماعيل بن محمد بن الفضل، حدثنا جَدّي، حدثنا إبراهيم الحِزامي، حدثني محمد بن فُليح، عن موسى بن عُقبة، قال: معاذُ بن جَبَل بن عمرو أحد بني سَلِمَة بن الخَزْرج، يُكنى أبا عبد الرحمن، مات سنة ثمانَ عشرةَ في طاعُون عَمَواسٍ، وهو ابن ثَمانٍ وثلاثين سنة (3).
Musa bin Uqbah says that Mu'adh bin Jabal bin Amr, who belonged to Banu Salimah bin al-Khazraj and whose kunyah was Abu Abd al-Rahman, passed away in the year 18 AH in the plague of Amwas at the age of thirty-eight.

(3) هذا هو الصحيح في وفاة معاذ بن جبل كما قال الذهبي في "تلخيصه" عند الأثر المتقدم برقم (5251)، غير أن إطلاق القول بأنه من بني سَلِمة بن الخزرج خطأ، لأنه ليس من ولد سَلِمة من صُلبه، إنما هو من ولد أُدَيّ أخي سَلِمة، ثم ادّعته بنو سَلِمة كما تقدِّم في قول ابن إسحاق برقم (5249). وإنما أخذه موسى بن عقبة من الزهري كما في "معجم الصحابة" للبغوي 5/ 265 حيث ذكر نسب معاذ بن جبل، فقال: من بني سَوَاد بن غَنْم بن كعب بن سَلِمة، وهو خلاف قول غيره من أهل النسب وأرباب المغازي والسير.
Important point: (3) This is the correct view regarding the death of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), as Imam al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis" under report number (5251).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the unqualified statement that he is from "Banu Salimah bin al-Khazraj" is wrong, because he is not from the direct (blood) descendants of Salimah; rather he is from the descendants of "Udayy", the brother of Salimah, and then Banu Salimah claimed him (as part of their tribe), as has already appeared in the statement of Ibn Ishaq under number (5249).
Reference / Source: Musa bin 'Uqbah took this from al-Zuhri, as in al-Baghawi's "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (5/265), where, mentioning the lineage of Mu'adh bin Jabal, he said: "From Banu Sawad bin Ghanm bin Ka'b bin Salimah", although this is contrary to the statement of the other genealogists and experts in the maghazi and sirah.
وممّن وافق موسى بن عقبة على قوله هنا في سن معاذ بن جبل وسنة وفاته والموضع الذي توفي فيه محمدُ بنُ عمر الواقدي حيث أسند ذلك بسندين له كما في "طبقات ابن سعد" 3/ 545. وهو قول خليفة بن خياط وابن أبي خيثمة وغيرهما كما في "تاريخ دمشق" 58/ 386 - 392.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Among those who agreed with Musa bin 'Uqbah's view mentioned here regarding the age of Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), the year of his death and the place of his death is Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, who narrated it with two chains of his own in "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (3/545).
Reference / Source: This is also the view of Khalifah bin Khayyat, Ibn Abi Khaythamah and others, as mentioned in "Tarikh Dimashq" (58/386-392).
