Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This report is "sahih", and there is "no harm" in the narrators of this chain. But it is "mursal", because Thabit bin al-Hajjaj did not meet 'Umar bin al-Khattab. However, it is narrated from 'Umar through several other routes, some of which are "mawsul" (connected), by which this report is established as sahih beyond doubt.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd (3/382), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir (25/461); and by Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1285), both from Kathir bin Hisham, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in "mawsul" (connected) form by 'Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/886), Abu Bakr al-Isma'ili (as in Ibn Kathir's "Musnad al-Faruq" 982), al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (617) (and through his route Ibn 'Asakir 16/240-241 and Ibn al-'Adim in "Bughyat al-Talab fi Tarikh Halab" 7/3123), and Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Makhlad al-Bazzaz in "Hadithuhu 'an Shuyukhih" (50), through the route of Damrah bin Rabi'ah, from Yahya bin Abi 'Amr al-Saybani, from Abu al-'Ajfa' Harim bin Nusayb al-Sulami.
Details of the narration: He said: It was said to 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): O Commander of the Believers, what if you nominated a successor? He said: "Had I found Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah alive, I would have appointed him. Then if I came before my Lord and He asked me: Whom did you appoint over the nation of Muhammad? I would say: I heard Your servant and Your beloved friend (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Every nation has a trustee, and the trustee of this nation is Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah."
Grading: Ibn Kathir graded its chain "hasan".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (1/(108)), and Ibn 'Asakir (25/460-461), through the route of Shurayh bin 'Ubayd, Rashid bin Sa'd and others, as "mursal". They said: When 'Umar bin al-Khattab reached "Sargh" (a place), he was told that there was a severe epidemic in Syria. He said: "I have learned that the epidemic is severe in Syria, and I said: If my appointed time comes while Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah is alive, I will appoint him as my successor; and if Allah asks me …" Its narrators are trustworthy, but it is "mursal".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/382), Ahmad in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1287), 'Umar bin Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/886), al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" (11/72) and Ibn 'Asakir (58/404) through the route of Shahr bin Hawshab, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form without the marfu' part by Ibn Sa'd (3/343), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/136), al-Baladhuri (11/70), al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (4/227) and Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (344) from Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Nakha'i as "mursal". He said: 'Umar said: "Whom shall I appoint as successor? If only Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah were (alive)."
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form with the marfu' part by al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1793), al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (866), Abu Nu'aym in "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (122) and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (12/391) through the route of al-Jarrah bin al-Minhal, from Habib bin Najih, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ghanm, from 'Abdullah bin Arqam, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of al-Jarrah and the fact that Habib is unknown.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari also recorded it in his "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (6/445) in suspended form (ta'liq) from his shaykh Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri, from Ibn Wahb, from Yunus bin Yazid, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Zuhri's narration from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is "mursal" (that is, there is a break in the chain); were it not mursal, all its narrators are trustworthy.
