Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) The manuscripts have "hal", while what is established from Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (6706) is more appropriate. "Halumma" means: come.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "hin", while what is established from manuscript (S) and al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" is the standard usage (al-jaddah).
Grading: (2) This report is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but it is "mursal" (as al-Dhahabi indicated in al-Talkhis).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because Abu al-Bakhtari (Sa'id bin Fayruz) did not meet Abu Bakr or Abu 'Ubaydah. In some narrations of this report 'Umar bin al-Khattab is mentioned instead of Abu Bakr, but Ibn 'Asakir said (Tarikh Dimashq 25/463): "What is preserved (mahfuz) is Abu Bakr." In any case, this discrepancy does no harm; the real issue is the "irsal". But since it is also narrated through another mursal route, the report becomes sahih by the combination of the two (in sha' Allah). Moreover, its marfu' part is sahih and well known. "Muhammad bin Ishaq" is Ibn Khuzaymah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (2806), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir (25/463), from Yahya bin Muhammad bin Sa'id, from Ziyad bin Ayyub, with this chain. But he mentioned 'Umar bin al-Khattab instead of Abu Bakr. Ibn 'Asakir said: "Thus he said 'Umar, but what is preserved is Abu Bakr." Then Ibn 'Asakir argued for this from the narration of Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash from Isma'il bin Sumay', in which Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is mentioned (its documentation will come). What is found with the author (al-Hakim) here is likewise proof of the correctness of his statement.
Reference / Source: However, Ahmad narrated it (1/(233)) from Muhammad bin Fudayl, with this chain, and mentioned 'Umar bin al-Khattab instead of Abu Bakr.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis (2360), and through his route Ibn 'Asakir (25/463), via Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, from Isma'il bin Sumay', from Muslim al-Batin (who did not take it further back) that he said: "Abu Bakr sent word to Abu 'Ubaydah …" Here Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is mentioned, but he dropped Abu al-Bakhtari from the chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Abu Bakr al-Marwazi in "Musnad Abi Bakr al-Siddiq" (128), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (29), Ibn Shahin in "Sharh Madhahib Ahl al-Sunnah" (168), Abu Nu'aym in "Akhbar Asbahan" (2/267) and in "Fada'il al-Khulafa' al-Rashidin" (120, 186), and Ibn 'Asakir (25/463) through the route of Marwan bin Mu'awiyah, from Isma'il bin Sumay', from 'Ali bin Abi Kathir, that: "Abu Bakr said to Abu 'Ubaydah …" Here Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is mentioned.
Grading: 'Ali bin Abi Kathir is a "trustworthy Successor", and the narrators below him are also trustworthy. So it is "mursal with an authentic chain". It seems that Isma'il bin Sumay' heard this report both from Muslim al-Batin (from Abu al-Bakhtari) and from 'Ali bin Abi Kathir, so he has two mursal chains for it.
Reference / Source: A report like this is also narrated from 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), but as a "mursal" of Ibrahim bin Yazid al-Taymi, with an authentic chain up to him. [See: Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 3/166, Ansab al-Ashraf 1/579, Tarikh Dimashq 30/273, al-Muntazam of Ibn al-Jawzi 4/66.]
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (3/166), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (14/570) and al-Baladhuri (1/579) also narrated it from Muhammad bin Sirin as "mursal". He said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, the people came to Abu 'Ubaydah, and he said: "Do you come to me while among you is 'the third of three'?" (meaning Abu Bakr). Ibn 'Awn said: I asked Muhammad (bin Sirin): Who is the third of three? He said: Have you not seen that verse: ﴿إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا﴾ (When the two of them were in the cave, when he said to his companion: Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us [so Allah was the third])? The narrators of its chain up to Ibn Sirin are trustworthy.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in the account of the death of the Prophet and the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr on the day of the Saqifah, it is reported that Abu Bakr said to the people: "Pledge allegiance to 'Umar or to Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah …" It was narrated by al-Bukhari (3668).
