It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no prayer for the one who has no ablution, and there is no ablution for the one who did not mention the name of Allah (at its start)."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator is Ya'qub (bin Salamah) al-Laythi, not Ya'qub bin Abi Salamah al-Majishun as the author (al-Hakim) mistakenly has it. Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi objected to this in his "Talkhis", correctly identifying him as Ya'qub bin Salamah al-Laythi, and he declared its chain soft (layyin). This Ya'qub and his father are both "majhul" (unknown) narrators. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in 15/ (9418) and Abu Dawud (101) through Qutaybah bin Sa'id, with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): With both of them the name is stated explicitly as "Ya'qub bin Salamah". For further detail, see the next narration.
