It is narrated from Abu Ubaydah bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: "Among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I had three close friends, and I spared no effort (in choosing them): Abu Bakr, Umar and Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with them)."

Grading: (3) This report is "sahih", and there is "no harm" in the narrators of this chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Abu 'Ubaydah (Ibn 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud) did not hear from his father. However, Abu al-Ahwas ('Awf bin Malik al-Jushami) also narrated it from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, so the report is sahih. (Identifying the narrators): "Sufyan" refers to al-Thawri, "Abu Ishaq" refers to 'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i, and "Abu Hudhayfah" refers to Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1277, 1551), and Ibn 'Asakir [25/474], via Waki' bin al-Jarrah, from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain. And al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" [11/68], Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2549) and Ibn 'Asakir [25/474] recorded it via Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from Abu al-Ahwas, from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, and its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sharik al-Nakha'i corroborated Zuhayr [see: al-Daraqutni's al-'Ilal (909)]. Disagreement of this kind over Abu Ishaq is to be understood as reflecting the multiplicity of his shaykhs, not as idtirab (inconsistency), because Abu Ishaq's narrations are very extensive. This is what emerges from the statement of Abu Hatim al-Razi [al-'Ilal by his son (2647)]. And al-Daraqutni's statement is more explicit [al-'Ilal (909)]: "It seems that both are correct."
