Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5227

It is narrated from Tariq bin Shihab that when the plague (of Amwas) broke out in Syria, a letter of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reached us. He had written to Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him): "A necessary matter has arisen for me concerning you, in which your presence is indispensable to me." Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) (understanding the purpose of the letter) said: "May Allah have mercy on the Commander of the Believers; he wants the survival of people who are not going to remain." Then he wrote in reply: "I am in one of the armies of the Muslims, and I do not wish to separate myself from the affliction that has struck them all." When Sayyiduna Umar read this letter, he said the words of istirja' (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un: We belong to Allah and to Him we return). The people asked: "Has Abu Ubaydah passed away?" He said: "No." However, he wrote to him a firm order: "Leave the land of Jordan, for it is a low-lying and plague-ridden region, and go to al-Jabiyah, for it is a healthy and verdant place." When this firm letter arrived, he ordered his crier to announce departure among the people. Then, when a mount was brought to him to ride, and he placed his foot in the stirrup, he drew it back and said: "I think that your disease (the plague) has seized me too." The narrator says: Then Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, and the plague was lifted from the people.
All the narrators of this hadith are trustworthy, and it is an extremely astonishing narration.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The printed edition has "'amiqah", whereas the correct form is "ghamiqah" (with a dotted ghayn, and no ya' after the mim). It means: land that is near water, damp and with much dew, from which epidemic arises.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In manuscript (S) there is a blank space (bayad) between "ilayhi" and "li-yarkabahu", and in (Z) there is a mark (tadbib) over the phrase but no blank space. There is no difficulty in the phrase; only the deputy subject (na'ib al-fa'il) is omitted, and it is known from the context. The implied sense is: "his camel or horse or mount was brought to him so that he could ride". This is permissible in Arabic, as in the saying of Allah: ﴿فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ﴾ [Then why, when it reaches the throat], that is, the soul.

Grading: (3) This report is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Tariq bin Shihab saw the Prophet and met Abu 'Ubaydah and 'Umar bin al-Khattab, he was not present at this incident in Syria. The one who was present at this incident and told Tariq about it is "Abu Musa al-Ash'ari" (as in some narrations). It seems that Tariq sometimes named him and sometimes narrated it as "mursal". Therefore Tariq's statement in the author's narration, "The letter of 'Umar came to us", is an "error" (wahm).
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" [24/422] via al-Bayhaqi, from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it [25/484] via 'Uthman bin Jabalah, from Shu'bah, from Qays bin Muslim, in a similar way.
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi recorded it in "Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar" [4/305] via 'Asim bin 'Ali and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ziyad; al-Haytham bin Kulayb al-Shashi in his "Musnad" (618) - and via him Ibn 'Asakir [25/483] - via Wahb bin Jarir; Ibn 'Asakir [24/423] via Adam bin Abi Iyas; and al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (the musnads of the Ten, 113) via Muhammad bin Ja'far. All five narrate from Shu'bah, from Qays bin Muslim, from Tariq bin Shihab, that: "We were talking with Abu Musa al-Ash'ari when he said... I will tell you what people should do in a plague: I was with Abu 'Ubaydah and plague broke out in Syria..."
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tarikh" [4/60-61] via Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Shu'bah, from al-Mukhariq bin 'Abdullah al-Bajali, from Tariq bin Shihab, from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Ibn Ishaq mentioned "al-Mukhariq al-Bajali" in place of Qays bin Muslim, and no one corroborated him in that; he also narrated it with "'an'anah". Although al-Mukhariq is thiqah, there is disagreement over his father's name (Khalifah, 'Abd al-Rahman or 'Abdullah).
Note / Clarification: "اظْهَر" means: go out to the open part (zahir) of the land you are in.
Note / Clarification: "الغَرْزُ": the stirrup of a camel saddle made of stitched leather.
