Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5225

It is narrated from Ibn Abi Najih that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his companions: "Make a wish (for what you desire)." So each one of them began wishing for something. Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "But I wish for a house filled with men like Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (brave and trustworthy)." The people said to him: "You have spared nothing in your goodwill for Islam." He said: "That is exactly what I intended."

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) This report is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are thiqah, but it is "munqati'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because Ibn Abi Najih ('Abdullah bin Abi Najih Yasar al-Makki) did not meet 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). However, it is reported from 'Umar bin al-Khattab through another route with a "hasan chain", which has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (5075). "Sufyan" refers to Ibn 'Uyaynah, and "Ibn Abi 'Umar" refers to Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd recorded it in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" [3/382], al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" [11/72], Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Mutamannin" (39) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [25/474] through various routes from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah.
Note / Clarification: The meaning of their words "ما أَلَوتَ" is: you did not fall short or neglect anything.
