أخبرني أبو الحُسين (3) الحافظ (4)، أخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق الثَّقَفي، حدثنا داود بن رُشَيد، حدثنا محمد بن ربيعة، حدثنا أبو عُمَيسٍ، عن عَوْن بن عبد الله بن عُتْبة بن مسعود (1)، عن أبيه، قال: لما مات عُتْبة بن مسعود بكى عبدُ الله بن مسعود، فقيل له: أتبكي؟! فقال: أخي وصاحِبي مع رسولِ الله ﷺ، والثالثُ: وأحبُّ الناس إليَّ، إلَّا ما كان من عمرَ بن الخَطّاب (2).

Awn bin Abdullah bin Utbah bin Mas'ud narrates from his father (Abdullah bin Utbah) that when Utbah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) died, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. It was said to him: "Are you weeping?" He said: "He was my brother and my companion in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was the third (among the brothers), and he was the most beloved of all people to me except for Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)."

(3) تحرَّف في (ص) إلى: الحسن، وإنما هو أبو الحسين محمد بن محمد بن يعقوب الحجّاجي.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscript (S) this name has been corrupted into "al-Hasan", whereas he is "Abu al-Husayn Muhammad bin Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Hajjaji".
(4) أُقحم هنا في (ز) و (ب): أخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق الحافظ، وهو غلط.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) the words "Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Hafiz informed us" have been inserted here, which is wrong.
(1) أُقحم في نسخنا الخطية في اسم عون هذا اسمُ عبد الله بين عُتبة ومسعود، فأوهم ذلك أنه من ولد عبد الله بن مسعود، وفي ولد عبد الله بن مسعود من اسمه عبد الله بن عتبة بن عبد الله بن مسعود، ومن ولده أبو عُميس والمسعودي، لكن ليس في ولده مَن اسمه عَون، إنما عونٌ هو ابن عبد الله بن عتبة بن مسعود، فهو من ولد عتبة بن مسعود أخي عبد الله بن مسعود، وهو مشهورٌ.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts the name "'Abdullah" has been inserted into the name of this 'Awn between "'Utbah" and "Mas'ud", which gives the false impression that he is among the descendants of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud. Among the descendants of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud there is indeed "'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud" (and among his descendants are Abu 'Umays and al-Mas'udi), but there is no one among his descendants named "'Awn".
Important point: "'Awn" is in fact the son of "'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin Mas'ud", so he is among the descendants of "'Utbah bin Mas'ud" (the brother of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud), and this is well known.
(2) إسناده صحيح كما قال الذهبي في "تلخيصه". أبو عميس: هو عُتبة بن عبد الله بن عتبة بن عبد الله بن مسعود.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "sahih", as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis". (The narrator) "Abu 'Umays" refers to 'Utbah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
وأخرجه أبو نُعيم في "معرفة الصحابة" (5349) عن أبي حامد بن جَبَلة، عن محمد بن إسحاق الثقفي السَّراج، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5349) from Abu Hamid bin Jabalah, from Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Thaqafi al-Sarraj, with this same chain.
وأخرجه ابن أخي ميمي الدقاق في "فوائده" (60)، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 44/ 377 من طريق أبي القاسم البغوي، عن داود بن رُشيد، به.
Reference / Source: Ibn Akhi Mimi al-Daqqaq recorded it in "al-Fawa'id" (60), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [44/377] via Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, from Dawud bin Rushayd, with this same chain.
وأخرجه الطبراني في "الكبير" 17/ (339)، وفي "الأوسط" (5873)، وأبو نعيم (5347) و (5348) وابن عساكر 44/ 377 من طرق عن محمد بن ربيعة، به.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" [17/(339)] and "al-Awsat" (5873), and Abu Nu'aym (5347, 5348) and Ibn 'Asakir [44/377], through various routes from Muhammad bin Rabi'ah, with this same chain.
وأخرجه ابن أبي خيثمة في السفر الثالث من "تاريخه" (2244) من طريق عبد الواحد بن زياد، عن أبي عُميس، عن عون بن عبد الله، لم يجاوزه، وليس فيه ذكر ثالث الخصالِ.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah recorded it in the third volume (sifr) of his "Tarikh" (2244) via 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, from Abu 'Umays, from 'Awn bin 'Abdullah, and did not take the chain beyond him (it is mursal).
Note / Clarification: And it does not mention the third trait.
