It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him): I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Battle of Hunayn. I saw that there was no one with him (peace and blessings be upon him) except me and Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib. He (Abu Sufyan) was holding the bridle of his (peace and blessings be upon him) mule while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding it, and Abu Sufyan spared no effort in pressing forward swiftly towards the polytheists.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In manuscript (B) and in the printed edition this name has been corrupted into "'Ali bin 'Abd al-Muttalib".
Grading: (3) Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identifying the narrators): "Ibn Abi 'Umar" refers to "Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani", and "Sufyan" refers to "Ibn 'Uyaynah". Reference / Source: Imam Muslim (1775) recorded it from Ibn Abi 'Umar with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hence al-Hakim's including it as a supplement (istidrak) is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part. Reference / Source: Ahmad [3/(1775)], Muslim [1775 (77)], al-Nasa'i (8593) and Ibn Hibban (7049) recorded it via Ma'mar bin Rashid, from al-Zuhri, with this same chain. Note / Clarification: This narration will come in detail with the author (al-Hakim) later at no. (5505) via Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli from al-Zuhri.
