Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5166

Ahmad bin Sayyar relates that Sa'id, the father of Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-As, had twenty sons and twenty daughters. As for al-As bin Sa'id, the Commander of the Faithful Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him as a polytheist on the day of Badr; and as for Khalid bin Sa'id, he was martyred at Marj al-Suffar in Muharram, 14 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is written "wa-Muhammad" (with an added waw), which is wrong. The name of Abu Nu'aym al-Ghifari is in fact "Muhammad bin 'Abd al-Rahman" (without the waw).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In our manuscripts, in both places, "'ishrina" has come (in the accusative case), whereas the standard usage is what we have established. [For details see Ibn Malik's "Shawahid al-Tawdih" p. 170, and 'Abbas Hasan's "al-Nahw al-Wafi" 2/ 111-123].

Note / Clarification: (1) The genealogists did not list more than eight sons of Sa'id bin al-'As "Abu Uhayhah", and Mus'ab al-Zubayri mentioned their names in "Nasab Quraysh" (p. 176).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated in "al-Ishraf fi Manazil al-Ashraf" (303) from 'Abd al-'Aziz al-Umawi, who used to relate from his family, that Sa'id bin al-'As Abu Uhayhah had eight sons; he listed all their names and also mentioned the place where each of them was killed.
