Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5165

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abi Bakr narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had appointed Sayyiduna Khalid bin Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor of Yemen. He arrived in Madinah after his (peace and blessings be upon him) passing and held back from giving the pledge of allegiance for two months, saying: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed me as commander, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dismiss me until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, took his soul." He met Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib and Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "O Banu Abd Manaf! Have you willingly given up your leadership, so that someone else now takes charge of it?" The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) paid no attention to this remark of his, but it continued to rankle in the heart of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then, when Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent the armies to Syria, the first person he appointed as commander over a quarter of the army was Khalid bin Sa'id. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began saying: "Are you making him a commander, when what he did and said is before you?!" He kept on persuading Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) until he dismissed Khalid and appointed Yazid bin Abi Sufyan as commander.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In our manuscripts this word was corrupted into "yaj'aluha" (from ja'l), whereas the correct word is "yahfiluha" (from hafl), which means "to care about". It is said: "la ahfiluhu", i.e. I do not care about it. In some narrations the words are: "fa-lam yahfil biha". This verb can be used both transitively by itself and with the preposition "bi".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts this word was corrupted into "fastana'aha", whereas the correct word is found in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", which also agrees with the other sources of this report. It is derived from "idtaghana al-rajul", i.e. when a man harbours rancour (hiqd) in his heart.

Grading: (2) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", and the narrators of this chain are "unobjectionable".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But what is preserved (mahfuz) is that it is the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq (the author of the Sirah), which he narrates from 'Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Hazm as "mursal". And 'Abdullah bin Abi Bakr had no descendants ('aqib), as al-Waqidi stated explicitly [see Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 7/ 491]. So this report is a "mursal" of 'Abdullah bin Abi Bakr, and it also contains the "'an'anah" of Ibn Ishaq.
Important point: Since this report is narrated through several routes, it is "hasan" taken together.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in "Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk" [3/ 387], and by way of him Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 378), through Salamah bin al-Fadl al-Abrash. And Ibn 'Asakir narrated it in "Tarikh Dimashq" [16/ 78] by way of Ishaq bin Bishr al-Bukhari. Both of them (Salamah and Ishaq) narrate it from Ibn Ishaq, and he from 'Abdullah bin Abi Bakr, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Also 'Abd al-Razzaq (9770) narrated it from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, likewise as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" [4/ 91], and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir [16/ 79-80], from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Ja'far bin Muhammad bin Khalid bin al-Zubayr, from Ibrahim bin 'Uqbah, from Umm Khalid bint Khalid bin Sa'id bin al-'As.
Details of the narration: In it Umm Khalid mentioned that her father gave the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) after three months; he gave the pledge in the mosque while Abu Bakr was seated on the pulpit.
