Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: We (the Companions) used to say that whoever abandons his religion after accepting Islam and coming to know it, his repentance will not be accepted. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning them: "Say (O Prophet): O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah" [Surah al-Zumar: 53]. Ibn Umar says: I wrote this verse with my own hand and sent it to Hisham bin al-As bin Wa'il. He recited it aloud, then mounted his camel and went to Madinah.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Bashir (al-Shaybani al-Dimashqi). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the "sahih" position is that this hadith belongs to 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated from him by his son 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), as it has come in all the other narrations of Ibn Ishaq (for example the earlier narration of the author (al-Hakim), number 3670, which is from 'Abdullah bin Idris from Ibn Ishaq). The most likely view is that the "error" (wahm) here of dropping the name of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Bashir al-Shaybani. In light of the statements of the imams, Ibn Hajr in "al-Lisan" places him at the very least as "hasan al-hadith", but Abu Hatim al-Razi mentioned that he narrates several "munkar" hadiths from Ibn Ishaq. Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (22/462) narrated it from Ja'far bin Muhammad al-Firyabi with this same chain.
