Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5106

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) came (to the battlefield) on the day of Yamamah, having applied perfume and put on his shrouds, while his companions were being routed. He said: "O Allah! I declare my innocence before You of what these people (the enemy) have brought, and I apologise to You for what these people (the Muslims) have done. How bad is the habit you have given your peers! Clear the way between us and our enemies." Then he charged and fought until he was martyred. His armour had been stolen, and a man saw him in a dream. He told (him in the dream): "My armour is in a cooking pot under a camel saddle in such-and-such a place." He also made some bequests. So when that place was searched, the armour was found exactly where he had said, and then the people carried out his will.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. And the account of his bequests has a remarkable story:

Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Identification of narrator: "Thabit" is Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/356) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (4/345), Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (250), al-Tabari in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1307), Abu Bakr al-Barqani in his "Mustakhraj" (as cited in Ibn Hajar's "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" 3/436), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1327) and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (4/89), by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Some of them did not mention the story of the "dir'" (coat of mail) and the bequests in it.
Technical note: Imam al-Bukhari mentioned it in mu'allaq form (without a full chain) after hadith number (2845) using "the wording of certainty", as narrated from Hammad from Thabit from Anas, but he did not quote its wording.
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad (19/2399) and Ibn Hibban (7168) narrated, by way of Sulayman bin al-Mughirah from Thabit from Anas, only the part of this hadith about his advancing and his martyrdom in the Battle of al-Yamamah, without the rest of the hadith.
