Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5105

Sayyiduna Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Thabit al-Ansari narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I fear that I may have been ruined. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why?" He said: Allah Almighty has forbidden us from loving to be praised for what we have not done, and I find that I love praise; and Allah has forbidden us from arrogance and self-admiration, while I love beauty and elegance; and we have been forbidden from raising our voices above your voice, while I am a man with a loud voice. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Thabit! Are you not pleased that you live a praiseworthy life, are killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise?" He said: Of course, O Messenger of Allah! So he lived a praiseworthy life and was martyred (in the Battle of Yamamah) against Musaylimah the Liar.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it with this wording. However, Imam Muslim alone recorded this hadith in abridged form through the narration of Hammad bin Salamah and Sulayman bin al-Mughirah, via Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that when the verse "Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" [Surah al-Hujurat: 2] was revealed, Thabit bin Qays came (and then the whole story is related).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim", but most of the students of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri did not mention "Muhammad bin Thabit bin Qays" in it (who is a junior Companion who had the honour of seeing the Prophet), which makes the report "mursal". Nevertheless, it is a "mursal with a strong chain", as Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (10/524).
Details of the narration: Abu Thabit (one of the descendants of Thabit bin Qays) narrated it similarly in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (26/118) from his paternal uncle Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Thabit, from his father. It appears that Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Thabit heard this report from his father Muhammad bin Thabit bin Qays, even though his (Muhammad bin Thabit's) mention was not preserved in the route of al-Zuhri.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It also has a third route, which will come later with the author at number (5107), with a chain that is "la ba'sa bihi", narrated from the daughter of Thabit bin Qays, who related the story of her father. This makes it clear that this incident was well known in the family of Thabit bin Qays. In addition, al-Tabari mentioned other "mursal" routes of it in his "Tafsir" (26/119); so this report is, God willing, "sahih".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (7167) recorded it from Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli, from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Isma'il bin Thabit (here the narrator is attributed to his grandfather), that Thabit bin Qays al-Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah (and he mentioned it in mursal form).
Reference / Source: Likewise Imam Malik bin Anas narrated it in his "Muwatta'" in the recension of Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Shaybani (946), from Ibn Shihab, from Isma'il bin Muhammad bin Thabit al-Ansari, that Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari said; and he mentioned it in "mursal" form.
Details of the narration: Imam Muslim narrated, from the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) (no. 119), the part of this incident that mentions the fear of Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) that his deeds would be nullified because of his loud voice after the verse of Surat al-Hujurat (forbidding raising the voice above the voice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) was revealed, and the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) reassuring him that he was among the people of Paradise; as the author pointed out immediately after it.
